opinions needed! FRANKENSTEIN 83
hey guys,
so heres the deal. im all about solid axles, 1st gen 4x4s, and EFI. i found an 83 that is as clean as ive ever seen. just painted tundra silver with a little black added to the mix to get it to give it a smoke look. body is all there! here is the off thing. its on a shortened 89 long bed extra cab frame. the engine is from the 89 as well as the interior. it looks good and i dont mind the conversion. the independent front end is killing me though. it has a 6" lift on it with 33"s. what do you guys think. is it a go. i can always put more money into it and do the solid axle swap. any and all opinions would be nice. thanks guys

That sounds like an awesome conversion especially if it was done right and not scabbed together. Where are the pics!! A SAS would not be that big of a deal down the road sometime. I say snatch it up if the price is right and then do what you want with it later. I LOVE the 1st Gen body style. You would have the best of both worlds... a modern interior and drivetrain with the classic body. POST PICS!

hey guys,
ive posted this in the 83 section and havent got much opinions there. really like the truck and need feed back. what do you think of the off road capability of this set up. so heres the deal. im all about solid axles, 1st gen 4x4s, and EFI. i found an 83 that is as clean as ive ever seen. just painted tundra silver with a little black added to the mix to get it to give it a smoke look. body is all there! here is the off thing. its on a shortened 89 long bed extra cab frame. the engine is from the 89 as well as the interior. it looks good and i dont mind the conversion. the independent front end is killing me though. it has a 6" lift on it with 33"s. what do you guys think. is it a go. i can always put more money into it and do the solid axle swap. any and all opinions would be nice. thanks guys

sounds like the important things are there (good body, interior, drive train) I would buy it. Once you SAS it, it will be better than if it came from the factory with the solid axle. Besides, a stock solid axle/rig isnt ALL that great (weak birfs, and poor steering, undesireable steering box, undesireable u-bolt configuration, solid rotors, smaller calipers, 4.10 gears, open diff, narrower rear end) so basically you will end up putting alot of work into the front end anyway.
You will gain, the wider axle, better brakes (can be tranfered to the solid axle) better steering box, efi (not available in the first gens). seems like the best of both worlds if you are willing to sas
In my experiance when buying a vehicle to mod the most important things are the condition of the "shell" everything else just bolts on/off.

you pic's didn't come through...try uploading to a free service like photobucket.com and than copy and paste the [IMG] code into your post..
is it the 3.0 V6? not one of Toyota's better ideas but if it was well taken care of they can have a good reputation.
There is an older Ford or Chevy truck running around my area I see every few months sitting on an IFS 4x4 chassis, it is tastefully done...
Try your pics

Do it. It's got all the good stuff in it that people pay alot of $$$ for. If it's a 5 speed with that V6, you should already own it.
If you're doubting the deal, PM me and I'll fly down there and buy it myself.
Thanks, Phil
