Driveline question please.

Howdy all,

Today we had about 8 inches of snow fall, so of course I had to play a little!

Pretend this is you so you can "be in the cab"

you take off in the snow, not floored but 3/4 or so, and it revs up quick due to wheelspin in the powder, so you quickly grab second and back on the gas quickly. you hear a clunk right after the shift into second when you get back on the gas. WHAT IS IT?

thanks guys.

Might be clutch problem, or tranny gears are missing teeth. Cold weather might delay action in the gearing so you could be getting a delayed reaction from your shifting. But if it's a regular occurrence maybe gear is blown out at 2nd. Not sure until it's checked out.

check the play in your rear driveshaft, inspect your U-Joints. I did that once and toasted a Ring gear...drain the rear gear oil draining into a coffee filter or rag looking for chunks.

I think it is a u-joint/driveshaft thing, it feels like slop when you go from a no load to a load very quickly. my 95 yota did the same exact thing actually.

How can one check the u joints and any other joint below?

I am doing the gear oil sunday actually. valvoline 80w-90 in the front, rear and tc.

Does it, or is it, do(ing) it other times? Are you sure you didnt just "clunk" the clutch? My friend is pretty bad with a clutch and does it all the time. I cringe every time he does it. poor yota

how do you make a clutch clunk? if you just shift on dry ground slow it wont its when you are spinning in snow and grab second quick, its like snapping a belt(that you wear) it goes slack then when the tires are spinning and u grab second it takes up the slack. I suppose if I slipped the heck out of it it might not but if you are spinning its easy to near redline so ya better grab second quick. then when your actually in second and get back on the gas hard, you get the sound like a clunk.

Crawled under the truck, in 1st gear I cant budge the driveshaft in any direction, but then I put it in neutral and I can twist the drive shaft back and forth about a 1/4 inch or a tad more before it stops turning, think thats the clunk because thats what it sounds like! so does that mean the one u-joint at the rear of the driveshaft is bad or the one in the front as wel? thanks!

my buddies 84 dodge ram 4x4 318 4 speed std does the same thing.....when ur floored in first spinning and slam it into second and quickly and dump the clutch it will clunk....its just all the play in the drive line cause the tires slow down and then u dump the clutch it has to make up all the play in the drivline and goes clunk

You need to put the truck in newtral with the parc brake on and get under the truck and take one u-joint at a time and try to move the yoke around. The u-joint as a cross in the middle and 4 cups that have needle bearing in them. What happens is the needle bearings ware out in time or lack of grease ect... You need to see if there is movement between the cups and the cross by holding the yoke from the trans case with one hand and the drive shaft with the other and try to move the cups from one side to the other and in and out on the cross. If there is play then replace that u-joint and if not then grease it and move on. Your drive shaft will turn with the truck in neutral because of the play in the side gears and the backlash of the crown and pinion all add's up.
