Clogging fuel filter?

Ok maybe you've read my other thread on this but help me out. Highway speeds, loss of acceleration, steadily getting worse to the point where if I give it more gas or downshift, it starts bucking. Letting off the gas helps, it coasts fine, but when I give it gas it slows down more & more then eventually bucks, but at first feels like I'm hitting the brakes.

I replaced the fuel filter and drove it around town for 2 months with no issues. Made it from Montana to Phoenix no problem. On the way back home, same issues. Replaced the fuel filter, made it about 3-400 miles no issues. Then it happens again. Pulled over, replaced fuel filter, no issues the rest of the 300 miles home.

So, if it's a plugged fuel filter, what's the deal? Do I need to drop the gas tank and see if there's a bunch of crap in there? What else can do it? Do I just have bad luck with getting bad gas?

Or, is maybe pulling over for a second just making an intermittent issue go away, and the fuel filter isn't actually doing anything? Could it be something else? Somebody metioned vapor lock. Would pulling over & changing out the filter be enough to temporarily fix vapor lock? And if that's it, what the hell?! I was driving at all different elevations, and anywhere from 80 degrees to 40 degrees, and it didn't happen consistently at any one elevation/temp.

I really think it is your fuel filter, mine did the same thing w/ a clogged filter. I think it could very well clog in a matter of two months. Mine clogged in less than 6 months. In my understanding, this event happens becuase the gas is not getting to the carb/ engine fast enough under heavy accleration- so I would naturally think a mechical fuel pump or carb issue might also be something to consider... but like I said, I really think it is your fuel filter. I wouldn't worry about the tank... We've got old trucks, there has to be a ton of rust in junk in there... I seems alot easier to just change the fuel filter.

Ok, thanks. My fuel pump is new...again. My new one went out on this last trip, so it's now brand new. One thing a freind of mine mentioned is maybe I've actually got a bad rubber fuel line? Like maybe it's collapsing under load, sort of like a coolant hose can. I kind of doubt my tank is rusty, since the truck as a whole doesn't have much rust. Still considering dropping the tank to see if I can clean it out, but I'll probably replace all the rubber connectors in the fuel lines first. Guess for now I'll just keep one or two extra filters with me, eh?

Ok 83 drive your truck till your pretty much outa gas, take the drainplug out and watch all that rust and crud come out and then wash your tank out. Ditch your old rubber and steel hard gas lines under the cab since they crack under time.

Cracks feel just like an clogged fuel filter... under more rpm or under load its easier for the pump to suck air than liquid. I dont you where your fuel filter is but maybe replace it for one like mine so it very easier to see the shape it in when you check the oil...

I've been using an aftermarket marine spin on fuel filter (with a 10 micron filter) and have never had a problem with water or a clogged fuel filter. The filters are the size of a large oil filter and will hold about 8 ounces or more of water before they become clogged, they also have more than 10 times the filter medium in them making them almost impossible to clog. here's one of the kits

I also use 2 more of this style filter for my engine oil and transmission fluid (with different filters), it gives me an extra quart of oil in each one and hopefully reduces thier temperatures a bit.

Ok thanks a lot guys. I'll drain my tank & see if that helps, then look into a different style filter.

If it said so at the dealer...I'd say yes. I do wonder how much of a different dealer vs. aftermarket matters with fuel filters. I guess it's all cheap, but you can buy one for like 5bucks at Napa. I'm starting to think I've either got a ton of crap in my tank, or my lines need to be replaced. I'm at least going to change out all the rubber hoses.

fuel filters???? sorry

i have a 92 & an 06 4runner... 92 has similar issues: bog under accel, no power, idles fine.
truck was parked off & on for years due to deployments...
cure is only termporary by replacing filters @ 20 bucks each! new tank approx 200 bucks. if i go on a bumpy road-> and time to replace. because trash n rust gets sucked into filter clogging it...
the ONLY cure: 1)replace gas tank or 2)electrolysis to remove rust inside tank, then must POR-15 or KREEM or Caswell sealer application. 3) marine filter is GREAT idea but here we go again- more work n money.
typically under normal conditions a fuel filter should last several thosand miles.
qualification for suggestion: former Toyota dealer mechanic.
