Cleaning EGR

What makes up the EGR? I've got the metal hose that comes off the exaust manifold, then the piece that attaches to the head and has a diaphram on top. Is that it? What exactly needs to be cleaned in it?

I have an issue that happens about one out of every 4 or so times I start up my truck, where it fires right up, but then kind of chugs a bit, like the engine wants to stall, then chugs faster & faster 'till the idle finally smooths out & it runs right. Hitting the gas makes it smooth out faster. This is the only symptom of this that I've noticed. I do have an issue with my idle speed often being too high until the trucks been driven for a bit, but that may be a separate issue. Usually tapping the gas takes care of that, but not always right away, and it's pretty annoying.

Anyway my truck will probably be getting me down to Utah in the next month, and I'm just afraid something may be kind of clogged up and a big trip will finish it off...
