compare the backs of the clusters. look at where the "worms" lead. get a haynes manual and look at the gauge schematics in the back where the gauge cluster is listed and take the right color wire and connect ( solder or solder less crimps) it to the wire where the "worm" goes to. for example: the yellow wire should connect to the plug and go from the plug when plugged into the cluster through the "worms" to the IGN on the tach, temp, fuel- on the back of the cluster.
doing cluster work is kind of like the kid games in books where you follow one of the strings through all of the tangled up other strings to find out where it ends up.

I got a haynes manual out and im looking at the early wireng diagram, and it has some color codeing on it. If all out fails I did make my own little diagram before I started switching wires. I get what wires do what sorta, just not were they go in the sr5 cause there differnt in a non sr5.. was kinda hopeing someone would have a picture of there wires in the connecters.

When I changed the gauge cluster in my 83 I used the wiring diagram in the FSM. I used a fine point "Sharpie" pen and numbered each connection on the old connectors and on the "new" connectors that came with the gauge cluster. The wire colors are the same regardless of which cluster you have so it is fairly easy to identify them. You do not have to cut and splice wires!! Use a small bladed screrwdriver and release the metal contact from the old connector (I can't remember if you go in from the front or back of the connector, but it is really simple to do) and then clip it into the correct spot on the new connector. Doing one wire at a time you will not put them into the wrong spot. The three connectors can only go in on place in the back of the cluster because each one is configured to fit in only one spot.
To get the tach working I ran a wire from an unused green connector next to the igniter module under the hood to the appropriate spot on the gauge cluster. The Haynes Manual will not help you much. If you do not have an FSM, get one. They pop up on Ebay from time to time so keep checking there and elsewhere on the web.

I'll look over my post again and make sure everything looks right. It's possible that with all those wires you crossed some..it gets a little confusing. Numbering the wires is a good idea, make sure when you push the wires back in the plug that they are lined up the way they should be, pushed all the way in etc. Make sure the wire color is right. If I get around to it I'll pull my cluster and take photos. I'll admit though I'm getting a little sick of pulling it so it may take me a bit!

I got the non SR5 to SR5 wire color & number schematic over on the marlin site under 79-95 tech, 79-83 pickup how-to section. I double checked and it looks like a transposed everything right but I'll check agan.

I'm going to do a little research...when I look at my photos it kind of looks like they don't match the wire colors/numbers in the swap write up. All I know is I used that reference and mine worked, but I'll double check some stuff.

See if this helps. Can't really make out the numbers in my original post

I looked it over last night and it looks like some #/wire colors on my truck are different from this diagram, but most are the same.

I'll need to look back over my other thread, because this doesn't quite match up with the numbers I copied from what was posted on the Marlin site. Which is really confusing me because I followed what was on Marlin's site...and somehow mine came out right. Plus the FSM shows no difference between SR5 and non-SR5 wire locations. This is the only diagram in there, so I don't really get it, but we'll get it all figured out and I'll fix my thread if I need to.

You know come to think of it I don't think I paid much attention to wire color when I did all this. If you've already moved wires around it's too late so we'll need to figure it out another way, but I think I just pulled from the non-SR5 number slot, and moved it to the SR5 slot, and didn't really worry about color. That's all I can figure out because my wire setup doesn't agree with the FSM, and it also doesn't agree with the SR5 to non-SR5 swap write-up I've got. Not one of them agrees with the other as far as wire color and what the wire does, so the only way it could have worked for me is that we've got the # right. Anyway check out what I pm'd you, that's how mine is set up and it all works. I'll put a disclaimer on my thread, after I find out from you whether it works, to ignore wire color and go by slot #. I think someone may have mentioned, after somebody first posted this on the Marlin site, that some wire colors were different, but that the #'s were correct. We'll see. Let me know!

Starting to make sense. Looks like the part I copied from the Marlin forum counts every slot, where the FSM doesn't count empty slots, so while it should all end up the same, the numbers don't match up. Anyway let me know how it works out and I'll put a disclaimer or some more info in that thread so people don't get things mixed up.
