81 Pickup power steering
Hi New to the hole world of Toyota 4x4s. i just picked up an 81 pickup and it dose not have power steering. the question is was power steering offered in 81 and or can i use my factory steering box and just get a pump and some hydraulic lines?
thanks Dave

Can't remember if it was available in 81 but it was definitely available in 83, and everything should be the same between the two, so you could find a power steering gear box, pump + pullys and swap yours out. Or yes, you can drill your gearbox and get hydro assist. There are threads on it on the Marlin Crawler forum and probably Pirate4x4. I've had the whole power steering set up laying in my garage since March...just haven't got around to installing it..

Looks like it's actually for an IFS box...not sure how easily that translates to a SFA box, but it might give you an idea of the job.

Unless someone added it! But yeah, I think maybe by the time the first 4x4 pickups came out it was already an option, maybe just not a common one, so it would make sense that any 79-83 pickup could have come with power steering.

Yes ... Power steering was first introduced in the /81 SR5 . and very directly interchangable with components to /85 >>>> /86 + IFS box requires modifications .
components needed are :
P/steering box
P/steering pump + brackets
Pressure hose
return hose
cooler (in front of the rad support)
resivior
crank belt pulley (and the 4 bolts to attach it)
tensioner pulley
belt
very easy "option" to install

i just did it.it was realy easy found a rig with all the components all of it bolted right on.here are some pics of the parts you will need
pump and gear box
mounting brackets
steering shaft
pully that goes on the crank
resivor and cooler
my manual gear box was shorter than the power one
needed the steering shaft to go with it
my manual gear box was not threaded for the lines either no provisions for it

You won't find it right away unless you're lucky. I looked for it along with a bunch of other parts from over 6 months before it popped up. Just keep looking.
Steering shaft, eh? Crap. I didn't get the steering shaft...didn't get the pulley that goes on the crank, either, but I've heard of people getting away with putting the belt on at an angle, on the pulley that must be meant for AC? Not ideal...but it would work until I found that extra pulley. I wonder if I'll definitely need the steering shaft...looks like I should do some measuring.
Check the internet, check your local junkyards. Eventually something will come up.

depends on the year of P/S you get , as to wether you need the shaft .. 81-83 p/s box has a large spline u-joint 84-85 have a rag joint .. Installing a /early style to early style , I have never changed the shaft .. but on my Trekker build , I used a 84-85 shaft to get around a large /99 DD brake booster , so I needed the rag joint style .
other installes I have done , I have never had to swap the shaft .
as for the pulley .. you will need it .. if you install the bet at an angle , it WILL slip off .. I would hate for that to be on the hi way or something when you not expecting it . find the pulley !

well just be aware of the length of your gear box there are some slight variations on box lenght i have read on another tread on here that there is a difference in box lenght.some just dont have th provisoins for the fluid ports. i just put power steering on mine like 3 weeks ago and my power box was shorter and my shaft would not fit(some kind of girth problem) He He. luckily i took the shaft off the truck i robbed it from.
