i have 5.29's with 32's and i love them. i still can go 65mph down the road but my rpms are higher (tack's broke) but its it too high. if i was going to run 38's i would definitely go with the 5.29 gears.
also i have the 22r engine so i need all the gearing i can get.

This is about what will put you closest to stock gearing
4.56- 31" to 32"
4.88- 33" to 34"
5.29- 35" to 37"
5.71- 38" to whatever at that point you should have dual cases
A lot of guys running 38's or even 42's still like the 5.29's cause the gear teeth have so much girth. I've sheared teeth of my 4.10 ring gear before so yes this is of some importance
5.29 should be just fine for you application and for god sakes, search.

Actually if you go check out ZUK's comparison of the 5.29's and 5.71's you will learn alot about the BS behind the myth of 5.71's

THough it does not pop right out like a 4.10 does I see no reason whatsoever to shave any thing off the housing...though if you did it would just need to come off slightly at the notch at the bottom of the housing...

Zuk's site does have that excellent article about the myth of 5.29's vs 5.71's as oleharleyman said.
You a manual or Automatic? Tippy is/was an automatic with 35's and 5.71's and she needed that gearing because she has such a tall overdrive. the 5.71's almost made her like a crawler. But the lack of power in the 3.slow is what would kill that crawler effectiveness. Now if I ever hook up that 3.4... WHEEEE!
