20R "preformance"
Over the winter I'm going to turn my attention to my 78 Celica GT, so time to do some research into my 20R.
Alright, thus far it's a pretty stock engine. Due to a leak though I have put a set of headman headers on it.
I'm thinking about 3 areas: Cam, Carb and exhaust. Keep in mind that this is a Summer DD car, I have no desire to tuner it to death. But I can't promise that it won't get thrown sideways on some rally roads.
Carb: I want to go with a Webber carb. But I'm not sure between a 32/36, or a 38/38. I've read that the 38's make more power, but the 32/36 gives better mileage. Any experiance?
Cam: I'm not really sure what to look for in a street cam. The TRD cams don't look too bad(or really any aftermarket ones). But I've seen several people on celica boards running the stage 2, which toyota says "offroad only". Does that just mean I'd need to live with a rougher idle/play with it?
Exhaust: I've been told both 2 1/4" and 2 1/2". I know my headers have a 2 1/2" collector pipe. Either way I plan to ditch the cat.
Any other suggestions for relativley low budget mods? (ie no super/turbo chargers) Thanks
PS: yes I know it's not about a 4x4...but it's still a Toyota, and has the same engine. Please forgive me 4x4 gods

first off, i'd junk the 20R carb. they have a very small CFM and a crummy plunger type accelerator pump. a weber 32/36, properly jetted will help a great deal. for the exhaust, i think getting rid of the stock "oven" type manifold will make a big difference. 2 1/4 exhaust is the best bet here.
as far as the cam goes, i'd recommend something along the lines of a 270 or better grind. since its a celica, you're going to want to have some fun at over 3000RPMs, so a little more radical cam won't hurt anything. TRD says their cam is for "off-road use only" as it might cause a little more emissions, not really because of driveability problems. also, while you're replacing the cam, put in some new 22R aluminum rockers. they'll let the engine rev a little faster than the steel ones that the 20R has.

I'd slip a 22r short block undernieth the head ..
I've done it ... and its worth it .
they are readly avaliable ... and can be done farly inexpencivly . so bottom line .. it all comes down to how much you want to spend .
I did one many moons ago into a celica ~ 150-170 hp .. cost about 4G's (parts only) .. but its still running today .
