20R/22R Hybridization
Well on one of my many travels to my garage now I banged my foot on the block that I took out of the bed on the pickup that I bought and remembered that I never really figured out which block it was. I thought that it would be an impossible task and that I'd never figure it out. Then I noticed the spots where the block #'s were and there beside the serial number was the 22R stamp!!
Seeing my good fortune I figure that I wouldn't mind giving the block a second lease on pushing a truck around. Does anyone have any good info or links to doing the 20R head to 22R block swap? I know only a few things about the two, like the 22R head was shorter and that the ports were different because of emissions restrictions but that's about it. The 20R that I have now is still running so I'll have a lot of time to get the necessary parts together, but wouldn't mind getting my head around what's required, as well as raiding the Toyota pile at the local junkyard Both Head and Block are from Early Engines. The 20R I have has the Passenger side dipstick and the 22R is an 81 or so. Overall this truck is a puzzle to me, the Tranny seems to be a 5 speed too, which would mean that it's been swapped... maybe with the motor previously? I dunno.

make sure that block is from an early engine -- it won't have a peanut or "UFO" shaped boss cast into it on the driver's side near the bottom.
if you've got the passenger dipstick 20R, that thing is ancient! that's a pre '79 engine. however, the only downside to using that head is that you won't be able to use the factory power steering mounts(no front hole) or a mechanical fuel pump. other than that, you're golden.
to do the swap, think of it as building a 20R but using a 22R block and pistons(and rings). you can use the crank and rods from your 20R even. get the block checked out and get the proper pistons for it, then rebuild it with the parts from the 20R. i'd recommend having some head work done on the 20R head and put in a good cam, and aluminum rockers(dealer ones are a bit pricier, but best)

Cool, thanks for the info. Somehow I figured that you'd be the one letting me know what's up. I'm really not that set on having power steering or the mechanical fuel pump. I already have an electric in line job on my 20R as it is, so that would get swapped over. The block is in nice shape, but it's in need of a cleaning and I'd get it honed and the like before I went ahead with any engine work. I'd definately port the intake and get a header for it. The 20R is out of an early Celica, it was swapped into my current '77 Hilux It's a strong engine, it just needs a better home and a cleaning. It's had a top end kit in the last 10k or so, but the carb needs some attention... damned old Aisin stuff.

im gonna bring up this old thread cause i got a few questions.
i have an 80 20R, spn #1 rod bearing.
its got the mechanical fuelpump.
i have a lead on a good 86 22R short block.
question is, what is the actual issue with using the post 84 22R block for the hybrid setup?
and what kinda elec. fuel pump did yall use.

85---> engines have a different deck height .. although you can bolt the head on .. you'll never find a chain to fit . this is why you must use a 81-84 22r block .
when I did mine (years ago ) I just reused the mechanical pump

YES .. /81 threw /84
the later /85 + block (laser block) has a different deck height . Everything is "bolt on" even with this block ... problem with the later blocks , is the chain .. you wont find one to fit .. this is why you MUST stay with the 81-84 block for this conversion

just so you know the why do a 20r/22r hybrid is all in the head not the block yes you need the early block to do the mod. the real bang for your buck with these motors is the way the head flows, the 20r heads have open combustion chambers the 22r heads have swril inducing chambers. the result is a better flowing head and more torque.

20/22r hybrid?
Why is my hybrid not wanting to keep running after it warms up? I put new plugs and plug wires on and since then it dies after about 10 mins of running? Any help would be great thanks
