1981 22r Glowing Manifold
i have a really bad problem with my exhaust manifold glowing and i can not figure out y. i have a 1981 toyota with a 1992 22r-e engine with a carb on it. i have checked the egr,new cat, replaced all gaskets and bushings, reset valves, changed air fuel mixture, messed with the timing, checked that the crank cam and dis line right in sync and im outta ideas. its driving me nuts it was running completely fine a month ago until i re-torqued the head and re-set the valves then it started making my exhaust glow all the way back to about the middle of the y pipe manifold and all. i thought it was the cat so i replaced it when that didn't work i systematically went through the things it could be i was reading my manual one night and i saw that each year has different a/f mix settings so i popped the plug and found out that it was set to 4 and 1/2 turns out and the book said that was for post 85 engines and that the 81 is 2 1/2 out so i set it at 2 1/2 and now all that glows is the manifold so i am kinda stumped any help would be greatly appreciated. Rebuilt engine less than 3500 miles on it rebuilt carb less than 1500 miles on it. thanx

first off, WHY are you setting a 92 motor to 81 specs???
and if this didn't start til after you retorqued your head and set valve lash, I'd start there with diagnosing the problem.

I'd go back and tune the motor to the '92 specs and see how many of your problems go away.

If you have a 92 motor in your 81 truck, you don`t tune it by the 81 setting, you tune it to the 92 settings, so put the carb back to the stock settings at 4 1/2 turns and it will be fine again. The manifold is glowing because the engine is running to lean the way you have it set now.

im setting it to the 81 specs because that was the last thing that i could think of i have my truck set up street legal in cali. anyways i started at the top and worked my way down. but like i said earlier it got better when i set it to the 81 specs. when i re-set the valves they were way out ( past max specs)i could not even believe that it was still running but yet the timing is right, the cam is right, the crank is right, vac advance is working, i have no vac leaks at all! it stumps every one that i talk to even the machine shops, and major mechanics that i know.

yes it is completely rebuilt by my dad(mechanic). but still like i said earlier when i backed it to 2 1/2 it made it better. plus when you say running lean you mean retarded by the dis. right? otherwise i dont get y not having enough gas would make it overheat, i would think that it being retarded it is just firing too late when the ex valve is open right?

see i also thought it could be a cracked ex man but i took the ex apart and checked everything out it was fine and i even replaced all the gaskets ( btw the engine is rebuilt also less than 3500 miles on it) i also have it 3 degrees advanced right now i just could not see it being retarded.

Oxygen is required to burn fuel..you can create a hotter burn by introducing more oxygen, or less fuel.
all i know..is that when i leaned out the carb on my '86 22R..my underhood temps jumped dramatically..(i have header) and i started melting stuff attached to the firewall..

are you sure there isn't a blockage somewhere in the exhaust?
whether it be in the muffler..in the pipe..anywhere.
my '86 still runs pretty hot exhaust wise, but it's no where near what it used to..i should have measured under hood temps..cuz it was HOT.

my '80 20R never got abnormally warm while driving around town, idling, or muddin (and i had a 4speed with 31's)
it had THE SAME EXACT header that's on my '86 22R( literally...i took it off the 20R and put it on my 22R).
fact of the matter is..it's not supposed to get that hot.
idk if too rich of a mixture will burn hot or not?

are you sure it's timed right??..you've done the timing with a timing light?
get the timing right..then mess with the carb.
the year of the motor is a '92..but what year is the Carb? is it the same year? factory 1992 carb out of a 2wd base model truck?

i have checked the cam with the crank to the dis.i have gone as far as pulling the dist. and re setting that too. i have no intake leaks, exhaust leaks all the systems are working properly just don't get it.the only other thing i could think of is possibly the fuel cut cyl but i dont think it would do that.
