1985 Toyota 4Runner OM617.952 Mercedes Turbo Diesel Swap
I have a 1985 Toyota 4Runner SR5 with a 3.0 liter OM617.952 Turbo Diesel for sale. Motor has been in the truck for a little over a year and has been my daily driver/road trip/Camping vehicle. Last year I drove 1600 Miles round trip to NYC and back without the slightest problem. Currently 21,xxx miles on the swap.
Seen on Youtube:
Hill Climb
Specs:
- 4" suspension lift
- 63' Chevy Springs in the back/ HD Rough Country springs up front
- 35" BFG All-Terrain Brand New. (Still has the tabs from the injection mold.)
- Solid Axle. (was cut and turned to correct drive angle. (Moved forward 3" for better approach))
- High Steer
- Square Tube front D/S (0 Vibration) Need new Teflon bushings to quiet the chatter at low speeds
- Gusseted for support
- Steering dampener
- Tom Woods Custom Rear D/S
- Stainless Braided Brake Lines
- Custom Fabricated Oil Filter Relocation Adapters to allow easy filter access
- Rebuilt Turbo
- OM617.952 Motor
- New Head Gasket (installed while the motor was being fitted)
- New Monark Injectors. Pop tested @ 2000psi
- Modified Alda
- Modified Injector Pump (Rack Limiter Removed)
- Hybrid 8 Puck Clutch/New Pressure Plate
- Front Mount Oil Cooler
- Dual Manual Controlled Cooling Fans
- 4000psi rated ¾ and ½ hydraulic lines for oil delivery
- 2.5 Turbo Back Exhaust
- Gets 22 Mpg pulling up 5% Grades in WV and 25 Mpg running around local highway/City
- New Timing Chain
- New Fuel Lines
- Transmission is a stock W56 capable of withstanding the Torque of the Straight 5 Diesel
- Top Shift Transfer case
- Stock SR5 Altimeter/Inclinometer
- Aftermarket VDO Boost/EGT gauges with 4Runner Specific 2 Gauge Pillar
- All stock gauges function except for the RPM Gauge
- Leather Specialty Toppers Soft Top (included)
- Hard Top w/ Integrated internal LED lighting (Very Bright)
- Rear Mounted Battery (backup)
The Bad:
- Typical Rust over the rear tires on the fender
- Could use a re-gearing. I am the most efficient in 4th at the moment
- Tachometer doesn't work
This is an incredible truck and is always getting looks, comments, double takes, questions anywhere I go and when people hear that it is a diesel, the response never gets old. Never been stuck anywhere yet. I am pretty light on the truck as it is. I go by the "it is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it" with this thing. Never sees over 60 mph, and rarely sees boost over 6 psi. I built this truck to be a good gas mileage/Ultra Reliable/Versatile/Utilitarian Rig and it has become just that.
I am going to miss this truck. Put a lot of hard work into this, but my wife and I are trying to simplify our lives and with this thing in the drive way, I will find an excuse to upgrade SOMETHING.
I would possibly trade for something 4 door, equal value, also needs to be good on gas. Nothing Automatic.
I have receipts and pictures along with video for nearly everything and every mod. Also have every Fuel Fill-up since the swap, minus 2 or 3 when the printer at the pump didn't work.
I live in Louisville KY. I would consider driving it out to someone depending on the situation...
Asking 7,000. OBO.
Don't be afraid to offer. Worst I say is no. You can Call/Text offers to Five 0 2-Eight 1 0-7924
Thanks for taking a look!!

Swap was not too terrible. Worth the gain in MPG and torque. There are tons of "little" things that will throw a wrench into your progress, but over all, easier than swapping an RB26DETT in or something like that.
