HREW Tube size availability

With the purchas of a tube bender, I have been searching the local area for tube steel. There is only one steel supplier within a reasonable drive from me. They told me they can not get HREW in 1.75"OD. Is this the case? HREW just does not come in 1.75" OD?

They have all the 1.5" OD HREW I could want at $35.00 a stick, and have a yard full of 1.75" DOM at $113.00 a stick.

I would like to do the first few projects in HREW because it is so much cheaper, and I know I am going to make scrap. Is 1.5" OD .120 wall to thin for a set of basic sliders? I can get the 1.5" HREW in thicker wall. The die I will be receiving can do up to .134 Wall tube.

My cage is built from 1.75" .120 wall HREW. My sliders made from the same stuff. I would imagine that 1.5" .120 wall HREW will hold up OK for sliders. HREW seems to dent easier than DOM. I've banged up my sliders and they have a couple of dents. If you want, you could step up wall diameter on the sliders.

You local steel supplier is stupid. Find another.

1.5" is for bracing and slugs. $35/stick is high

bought 1.75" hrew a while back under $30/stick all day long

got 100' at shop now, DOM too

they cannot get it

Steel prices have been going up again big time recently. I would say that a decent price of 1.75" .120 wall would be around $2.00/ft for the average purchaser.

Thanks for the input all.

DOM is available at every steel supplier in NC. HREW not so much. Buying steel in general sucks around here. There is only one steel supplier with 2 hours of me.

Since the last post I have found serveral steel suppliers that have HREW. All are 5 hours away in the Charlotte NC area, all want crazy shipping on the frieght to get it here. All have the same cost per foot for 1.75" .120 wall, $3.35 a foot. I spoke to a real good salesman at one of them today. He said everyone is supplied with their tube DOM/Chrome/HREW from the same place "www.emjmetals.com". He said give them a call and see what they will do for you. So I did.

EMJ Metals was great to deal with. They will sell as much or as little as I want, and the best part, no shipping or frieght. They just said they will put my order on a truck coming to this area. Only asked that if the semi cant get down my road, I meet the driver at a commercial location for the delivery. Their cost is the same $3.35 a foot.

Mainly bought the 1.5" die for cosmetic stuff. And it was free anyways.

If you are in Charlotte NC area and need tube, Stock Car Steel has about anything you want. Best prices I found, and seemed to be really good people on the phone. If I end up driving to get the tube they are getting my bussiness.

3.35/foot is robbery around here. Typically $1.00/foot is typical. Last HREW 1.75" I bought was under $25/stick.

I deal with all sorts of steel everyday in my full timer and carbon steel pricing around here hasn't changed in months. Might be ridiculous in other parts on the country but not around Birmingham, AL.

I know man, I know, it get me in the wallet for sure. I'm going to check the prices in the norther VA area. My daughter lives up there, if cheap enough in that area, I'll buy it when I go to visit her.

Wabbit, at $25.00 a stick it would almost be the same cost for me to have you UPS me 8' pieces.

I will say that the $3.35 a foot for HREW seems to be the same cost as all the internet metal places.

If this becomes the norm for HREW, just think of how much things like the TG sliders are going to up too.

DOM around here is $135.00 a stick.

Well, I guess it is just because I'm close to Bham. Last time I bought 1.75" DOM I got 2 sticks for $150.
