Sycamore, AZ Explore Combo

Went on a little exploratory run yesterday. Consisted of just three 4Runners and one dog. Found some cool trails in the area. Lot's of good views and multiple loops. Plus we got to cross Sycamore Creek 8 times. A big thrill for us dry desert dwellers.

Just took a few pics this time... but I added a couple from last weekend in the same area just for fun.

Interesting clouds from past weekend:

Good view of the 4Peaks from the Trail 160 junction:

Getting ready to cross:

SOAZTim is second.... funny, didn't look that deep on the 35's :

Then 111db steps up:

Once past the creek, we found a lot of great stuff. Lot's of axle twister articulation sections. Little water fall:

He was looking forward to testing the new bumpers... but just gained to much clearance :

SOAZTim takes the tippy hi-line... not sure which is better:

Got to "Graveyard Tank" which was dry last weekend, but a pond this weekend. We were denied and had to backtrack. Had some fun getting back out but made it without any damages.

The reason for the name:

Took another shortcut back to Sycamore. Had to cross an additional 2 more times. One had plenty of deep sand to make things interesting. SOAZTim almost got trapped in Elvota's tracks but hammered down and spun across the raging waters.

This was Westy goofing around in 2WD the weekend before with no water flowing. That sand was soft!! :

Crossing number four:

111db close behind:

All in all was a good day with a few frustrating dead ends... but sometimes that can add more to the adventure than doing something known.

And a final random shot from last weekend:

Sure is green out there.... by AZ standards at least.

Nice pics! Very picturesque! (sp?)
I'm not sure, but is the guy in that green 4runner a model of some sort. Damn he's a handsome devil.

Yup, I here he's a shoe model...

Looks like a great time guy's! Every time I see Westy's truck I have to do a double take - it looks like my ol' beater used to That's a thing of the past tho - the new owner has de-caged it and cut off most of the flat bed to start making it over with his idea's.

hahaha!!! That's what I heard too.
His big feet do modeling as water skis and Ronald McDonald as well I hear.

I don't ever want to end up in that deep of water again. Thats one thing I've seen too many videos of and I can't handle taking a total loss of my 4runner. But, DAMN I feel alive today, sitting in my little cubicle with a guy yelling on the other end of the phone. He can put a damper in my mood today! I went rafting yesterday!

Great pics Jon!!

Really like that scenic view one. I was wondering if the sun on the distant mountains would show up in a picture. Definitely get some good vistas out in that area in all directions.

SOAZtim sure can lift a wheel or two and keep trucking. I wish you guys would struggle a bit more on places like that... would make me feel better about all the mods I have done. Guess Toyota just makes to good of a vehicle even in stock form.

Some really good ones as well Tim. I hadn't realized how often Mousse had her head out the window when I was driving on the trails.

I liked this one the best:

And of course... had to add a little commentary for humorous effect :

It's nice to get a run in like that... lets the real world make a bit more sense the following week.

Dang, you guys stop showing these pictures. I'm going to have to rack up more miles on my 4runner to make it over there (I really need to get out of Yuma ).

Nice photo's and writeups

Those bumpers look good Jon.

Very cool! A guy from the Jeep Liberty forum is coming up from Yuma at about 4:30 on Friday to camp at the clean up over night.
You might see each other on the road.

I doubt it we'll see each other. My 4runner is most likely going to see tow rig duty pulling an 83 longbed toyota pickup.

I'll be coming up saturday

Awesome pics guys! Elvota, how's the new 3.4 doin'? And what river is that? I just assumed AZ is bone dry this time of year but it's your rainy season isn't it?

The 3.4 is phenomenal. You are going to be stoked.

The fords are across Sycamore Creek. We have been getting a lot of rain lately (by AZ standards) and even some good snow as well. All this leads to some good flow.

For the group I went on this run with, I think we could have counted on one hand how many times we had crossed such rivers until that day.

Sure, take teh 87/beeline highway north towards payson 15 miles. Turn left at Four Peaks Road just before mile marker 204. Head down that dirt road and it will put you in the same area as us.

Sycamore/Four Peaks area closures-

Call the Tonto NF Mesa district before you head out anywhere this weekend.

Sugarloaf/Sycamore entrance is closed, as well as the Mesquite Wash and possibly others in the vicinity as of today. These roads are gated.

It is possible they will open the gates soon, they were closed due to the flooding/washes flowing.
