I have an 88 4runner, 22re, automatic and really don't like the sound of the flowmaster 60 series muffler. I am wanting something quieter. I am not use to the sound of an automatic with exhaust and really don't care for it. I have LC headers and a magnaflow cat.

what do you all recommend? I was thinking of going with the 22 dollar walker exhaust from advanced auto parts. any comments on that?

basically i need something with good flow that I really won't be able to hear if that makes sense.

(also, if I have my exhaust guy replace it, the flowmaster 60 series muffler will be for sale or trade for 1st gen 4runner parts if anybody is interested. only has around 300 miles on it.) thanks for all the help.

Basically the more expensive high flow mufflers use better sound canceling techniques, like canceling sound out by bouncing the waves into each other. If the $20 muffler is high flow it sure wont be quiet

 

yeah, that is why i got the FM 60 series. i thought it would be quiet. i really want something close to stock that isn't going to restrict the headers and hi-flow cat. this is the walker one i was talking about. not sure if it is hi-flow or not.

Im just saying if you want a quiet high flow muffler its not gunna be 20 bucks at advance

 

I'm running the LC header,downpipe, test pipe (cat), and new stock muffler it sounds great to me. I told the guy at the muffler shop that if he couldn't make it sound like a V8 to make it quiet because I hunt in this truck. He put a stock muffler on it and it's still is on the border of being to loud.

got a part number for that muffler? did you notice a decrease in performance?

 

It's a stroked 22RE, I've spent several $ on it because I'm running 36" hawgs with 4.88's and I drive it everyday pulling a trailer, my boat, dogbox, whatever. Don't get me wrong I love to hear a hot V8, but I can't stand a bumblebee 4banger with a fartcan muffler on it . We've got a guy at our club with flowmasters on his truck with the V6 and I think it sounds like crap and I can out run him. I don't have a part number but if you ask for a stock replacement it should be the same. Now finding someone to work on an 89' with no cat might require you showing up in person with $$ bills in your hand and no receipt. I know trythis is gonna hate me for the no cat thing but I LOVE YOU MAN.

 

I have a muffler from a 2006 Corvette on mine. You know it's high flow and it's quieter than stock.

the longer maganaflows are pretty quiet. I had on my truck for 2 days. It was quiter than stock but straight through. Was about $90 i cant remember the part # but its probably in my records somewhere.

No joke, the $20 muffler is awesome. I put one on my GF's car because she wanted a louder exhaust and it doesn't sound any different than before, but it definitely flows better. I know it sounds like it's way too cheap, and I can't say how long it will last (only been on there about a year), but if you want quiet, it's the way to go.

Yeah we all know how silent those vettes are. Get the stock replacement muffler you can crawl through the woods in stealth mode, talk to your girlfriend/wife without having to yell, and your truck won't sound like one of those GAY cars with the 10" tach that always says 0RPM.

 

What about Borla? Doesn't borla sound simlar to stock, but with just a nice mellow bass to it?

 

24'' magnaflow muffler and maybe a 12'' glasspack before the muffler ?

erg, Bodo, please put a cat on your truck. Treading lightly includes the air. I am still partial to breathing.

 

The 60 series is about as quiet as your going to get for a high-flow muffler. I am suprised you think its loud, I have the same setup, but with a MT. Its so quiet, not stock quiet, but quiet.

One thing I did on my 95 to make it quiet, had a header, no cat, and flowmaster 50 series, was have a 12" glasspack put in. Cut the noise in half without restricting any flow.. huge difference. The 60 series is still much quieter than that. I cant even hear it cruising, and have to really get on it to make some noise, but thats not even much....
