2nd gen. Auto to 5spd swap????

Hey guys, I have heard time and time again that with the 3.0 and auto set up the 4Runner is a dog on road and on hills. I have been told that I should look for a 5spd in a 2nd gen. Well there is only one 5spd that I have seen listed around here recently and it's on a 93' w/ a 3" BL, I want a 94-95 and w/o the BL. My question, what is the possiblity of swaping the auto tranny out of a 94' that I am looking at for a 5spd from another 2nd gen. I know I would have to get the transfer case to match the 5spd, but either than that what else might have to take into consideration to make a clean swap? Is it even possible, if not should I jsut keep my patenice and stick it out for a 5spd?

I say wait for the 5spd to pop up. To do the swap (I believe) you need the ECU, transmission, case, and do the whole "put in a clutch pedal assembly" which is probably not too fun. I say wait it out like I should have done!

Interesting. I saw many 5 speed 2nd gens when I was shopping around. I had to really look for what I wanted - a 5 speed with cloth interior but all the power luxuries. Most sunroof equipped 2nd gens had leather which I definately didn't want. I say wait a little.

On top of swapping trans you will need a complete R150F, a transfer case, pedal assembly and all the hydraulic lines including the clutch master and slave cylinders.

i have look in to it and its not a stright shot deal you will need the trans a t-case driveshafts crossmember ecu, wire harness speed sensor the hole pedal assamble and some misc stuff after you got all of that you have to cut a hole in the fire wall for the clutch pedal and a hole in the floor for the shifter and you lose the center console the best bet is to find a doner truck to swap every thing

Wow I didn't think about alot of that stuff, dang, well I either need to settle for the auto and try my best to pump it up withsome mods. or just hold out and get a 5spd under my belt. I have a good shot at a 4Runner from a member here, a 94' AT fully loaded for right about 5-6K and it's just an awful tempting thing to pass up. I can't find any other 2nd gens. for less than 7K. Mostare right in the range of 8-9K. What would you guys do, wait and pay a little more for a 5spd or go ahead andmake best w/ an auto and get my payments alot lower?

After riding in a friends '90 'runner with an auto, I'd have to agree it's a dog. He had 4:56's stock, and installed 31" tires. What about changing the gear ratios to make better use of the power?

I think you may be able to use the auto trans ECU with the manual trans if you swap, but it wouldn't work if you were going from 5 sp to Auto. I had a JDM 6M-GE in my '85 Supra, and I scored a 6M-GE from an '86 Toyota Crown with an Auto trans, and it worked fine with my 5 sp. I ended up switching back, and installing larger injectors though, because the JDM ECU had a speed limiter at 200 Km/Hr (125 MPH).

I have a 5 sp, and I'm going to go to 4:88's one day. I scored a good deal on the front 4:88 Ring & Pinion & install kit, now need to find a good deal on a set for the rear. Any suggestions?
