E-Brake light wont go off

E-Brake light wont go off
When i release my E-Brake and push it into the console, it wont completely disengage unless i hold it all the way in. When i relaease the E-Brake and begin to drive the handle pops out a tiny bit and the light comes on.
Do i have to replace the cable? the handle>? How hard is it to re-do an e-brake. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

It can be adjusted.
And/or your brake fluid is low.
This ? has been asked just a few times and some searching and reading would have given you an answer w/o having to ask it again.
Please post what solves your issue if you keep the thread.
Good luck.

i had the same problem with my 98 taco. you will have to adjust the brake cable under the truck. mine was a little siezed from mud and sand, so try visecrips. do not over tighten, do little by little. then jack up the left rear or first brake point and spin the tire, it should go a full revolution before stopping.

Hmm, I don't remember precisely how it goes, but if you crawl under your truck you can trace the main cable to a lever that pulls the cable for each side of the rear brakes. I would try somewhere around there. Maybe look in a Hayne's manual?

Make sure that you don't tighten too much. the haynes manual says how many clicks it should be. I think it was something like 16 clicks. if the rear brakes drag at 16 clicks then you will need to back off the starwheel insdie the drum.

well my brake light was coming on, when i would start moving, so what do i do, get on yotatech, and do a SEARCH, once again yotatech (and WabFab, thankx Brian) to the rescue.
I followed Brians wisdome
that did it :bigclap:

Check the fluid level and make SURE it is full to the "max" before you bother to adjust the e-brake.

My ebrake did the same thing and it was adjusted to spec. (Fluid was full also).
The spring that tensions the cable when you release it was worn out. Was putting virtually no tension on it at all. In the area where the ebrake mounts theres other various holes, frame bits etc. I just relocated the spring so that it would put more tension on the cable. The light doesn't come on anymore and ebrake works fine.

I had this problem and found seizure where my levers are attached to the back of the rear brakes. Make sure the levers return to the stop bolt. The Toyota dealer replaced the cables (ka-ching) Before it happened again and I fixed it myself by freeing the levers. This also caused my shoes to wear down prematurely. The Toyota dealer told me my cables had stretched. If you want to know if the light is from the emergency brake or the reservior try this. Tiewrap the part on the emergency brake handle down to the switch under the dash where it returns to. This will keep the switch in the "emergency brake off" position. If the light stays out while it drive around it is probably not the fluid level.
