Is this a symptom of a dying A/C compressor?

Damn, all these funny noises coming from my truck now!

so, for the last couple of weeks, I'll hit a bump in the road and all of a sudden there is a whining sound that rises and falls with the rpms of the engine. It seems to be getting more frequent as time goes on. When it happens, I can make it stop by turning off the a/c switch, and it doesn't usually come right back when I turn the switch back on. Of course, it never keeps doing it when I stop and pop the hood to listen.

My ac is still cooling as well as it ever did, no changes there. It almost sounds like the noise that my water pump was making when it was losing its bearing, but that couldn't be stopped by switching off the a/c. I did just replace my belts, could this be caused by an overtightened belt?

Do you suppose I'm about to have a dead compressor? If so, any good source for a new or reman?
