getting all the vaccuum lines fixed in my 87 2WD and I figured I'd ask about the cost of timing chain replacement.

I'm figuring this guy will charge $1200 or something. High, but not deadly. I trust the work without a question and they do excellent work. get this:

$3000+ to do the timing chain.

I about dropped #2 in my shorts.

so I'm assuming this is ungodly high and I'll be doing it myself.

Wondering what other people have paid to have it done by a mechanic?

sounds like he doesnt want to do it. 1200 for a timing chain on a 22re? wow...as I understand it doing a 3vze's is harder and we used to pay 225 and change for the dealer to do the timing change. Ive since done the timing belt myself and it wasnt that bad really. Particularly compared to the valve shimming and current top end rebuild...

He justified it by saving the whole head will have to be reworked and the valves done and all this wonderful sounding stuff that would dupe a housewife (no offense intended to housewives who may frequent an engine bay).

yeah. i think a weekend of downtime should be enough to get the job done right with normal tools?

 

Local Toyota dealership service, did timing chain on my 90 IFS,2.4L for 1875.00 Total. I did choke a little but it needed to be done. I dont have that kind of mechanical knowledge. And I didnt shop around for local repair shops, Now I did find a local Japanese car repair shop with two master toyota mechanics plus the owner. I wish I'd I found him earlier. Yet hes very fair and his shop is a 20 minute walk home for letting him service the truck.

 

Sounds like he is doing a top end rebuild, not just a chain replacement. However, at that price, ou could just buy another truck after your chain breaks, and drive it until it's chain breaks.

I had a pulley replaced, the timing belt, all the idlers, the water pump, and the belts replaced by a local shop for something like $1450... I know it is not a timing "chain" per say, but it's a lot less!

It's always best to find a shop of good guys and get work done by them all of the time, because they will tend to be on your side if you make friends with them.

I think $64 plus shipping and a weekend of my time is worth that kind of money. I think it'll make a few more thousand miles as long as I keep it oiled. On the plus side, the thing runs a hell of a lot better after having the lines redone and the tune up I did this week.

Now I just have to get the overdrive working.....time to call Mr. Evan Nichols!

 

Be sure you get the metal chain guides so you won't be fishing out pieces of plastic from your cover & oil pan later....

 

3k? hell, with machine shop labor(clean all the parts, hone the block, polish the crank), an EB master kit, street RV head and a 268c cam, i rebuilt the whole engine for under $1400!

 

you can find complete 22RE long blocks, installed, around here for $1100.

my friend had his done for $1250 (new TC cover), 30mos unltd mi. warranty

 

I think the beauty of the r-series motors is that most of the work, if not all of it, can be done by someone with a little knowledge and a FSM.

And the beauty of Yotatech is that you can get all the knowledge you need right here. I shotgunned the front of my motor, chain, oil pump, water pump, etc. for like $200 in parts or less.

At LEAST give it a try, there's helpful writeups all over the place.

Hell I had ZERO knowledge about my 3vze 4 years ago when signing up here. Now Im doing a full top end rebuild. YOU CAN DOOOOOO ETTTT!!!

(or if you want I can fly up there and do it fer ya for 2500! LOL )

 

hell yeah. I've already pulled the diagrams and troubleshooting flows for testing my overdrive circuit off of here. it's a beautiful thing.

I'd be screwed 4 months ago if it wasn't for this site.

Next step, get my toolbox back. Then we're tearing this thing down.

Hell I replaced rear mains and clutch on my old ranger because I hate paying people to do things I'm capable of doing. Especially now that I don't even have computer controlled crap to worry about. That's why I made sure my 22 was carburated.

the guide on my timing chain broke last year and i got an estimate to have it fix it was like $1300. so i put a couple hundred more to it and bought a $1500 22r rebuilt used motor and it works great, i have way more power than to old worn motor

 

then hell, you're in garner, hook me up with the numbers for where you got it done!

 

My estimates ranged from $800-1200 just for labor with me providing the parts.

I did it myself with a higher performance head for about $700.

My engine was rebuilt about 12k ago though so I knew I didn't need another rebuilt one.

Money is all relative... If you can afford the rebuilt one with a warranty it will always be better.

I think my next will be an orient engines rebuild. I like the $1500 price and the 3 year unlimited milage guarantee.

 

you need to come over when i put mine together man. kit comes on wed and im going to take the rods in on thurs. probabally build the bottom end next sunday. once you know how to do it yourself using the complete engnbuilder kit , you will save yourself 300 to 400 bux. maybe more if your machinist is cool. i think you should look for a sbc block or one that needs rebuilt and then buy the adaptors. we could build an sbc in your garage pretty easily. im just kind of against buying something someone else built , even with a warranty. my personality flaw. if i didnt have a place ,time or knowledge to build one id have to settle.

 

I actually thought about the SBC as I typed that and was like wtf am I typing?!?!??!

I wouldn't mind hanging out when you do the bottom end. Let me know when you're working on it.

I was actually thinking about freshening up the SBC when I get one anyway. For some reason the thought of working on a 350 is less intimidating to me than the 22RE is...

Go figure.

 

No Way, Its Actually Got More Parts To Screw With Like Pushrods And Crap. 4 Extra Everything..... Ive Never Done A Bottom End On A Sbc But Ive Pulled A Few Heads Intakes And Cams.
