4 wheel indicator light

The indicator light on the dash that shows when the 4 wheel drive is engaged does not light up. I recently took apart the instrument panel and replaced all the blown bulbs. I still have the same problem. The bulb for the 4 wheel is good and the 4 wheel engages. When the button on the lever is depressed there is the sound of a relay clicking but no light. Please help. I have a 92 surf turbo diesel.

Could be a bad socket, but these typically don't just go bad for no reason. I'd pull the bulb and with the dash apart, engage the 4WD and use a meter to check the socket for juice. you can trace it back from there. I'll bet one of the terminals on the relay provides power to the bulb. Track down where the relay is and use a meter to check the terminal that goes to your indicator light.

Could it possibly be a leak in the vacuum hoses that are used to engage the ADD sleeves?

I've got the same problem with a 3.0 diesel 4runner. When I met with Joey (UKMeyers) and Kerrs, we tested my truck and 4WD was engaging and it was just the light wasn't coming on. So we put it down to a blown bulb and I am living with it b'cause I thought removing the dash was a long job - maybe you can tell me how long it takes and where to start? Thanks.

I've got some details of dashboard removal on my site here:
http://www.showmesome.info/hilux/workshop/dash.htm

Not too difficult but I would allow a few hours becuase I found getting it back together again is more difficult than taking it apart.

I think it would be quite difficult testing the bulb socket with a voltmeter becuase you would need to get to to the back of the instrument cluster when it is connected and I found the wires are not really long enough.

I believe there is a white plug that is either by the transfer case, or by the firewall.
If that becomes unplugged, your light will not come on when in 4WD.

I have seen pics of it posted before around the 'Net, and it might be in the FSM, or the one that is online in PDF format.

This page may touch on the issue too.
