Mobil 1 Extended Performance + Oem Filter
I was at walmart and bought a 5 qt container of Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic Extended Performance oil for 26.48. Went to dealer and got a filter for 3.75 (special!!!!)
I asked the dealer about the myths of synthetic casuing leaks, and like the forums here, he said they were bogus myths from the non-believers! I asked him if there was a specific mileage about the oem oil filter because the M1 was rated at 15,000 miles. He told me that the filters would have no problem with that milleage. So i am going to be watching the oil condition and see when it starts to change color around 8-10,000 miles, hopefully it will make it to 15,000!
It feels wierd to say your gonna wait to change your oil for 15,000 miles!!
I figure I will save well over half of the cost when you add the filters and only have to change it once instead of 5 times!!! STOKED!

To get that sort of mileage from your oil, you should consider changing your filter halfway through your oil change interval. In other words, change your oil every 12000-15000, but change your filter every 6000-7500. The oil changing color is not a good indication of oil being ready for a change in a combustion engine, because engine oil darkens quickly... it doesn`t mean it is no good anymore.

I just swapped out my oil to synthetic so that I could do annual oil changes. Did a lot of reading before biting the bullet and it was recommended to change the oil filter at about 5k miles. I didn't want to bother so I found out that Amsoil has a 25k filter and used this instead of OEM.
Before I get flamed, I will not wait 25k to change the filter or oil. I will do this annually and since I drive less than 10k miles in a year, I'm pretty comfortable w/ this interval, especially considering the oil and filter I am using (both Amsoil). It also gets me to a mechanic less often, hopefully.

I'm ashamed to say this, but I have no idea what mileage I changed my oil last. Therefore, I have only the vaguest idea when to change it again. This is particularly irresponsible of me because it's Royal Purple synthetic, a $60 oil change, lol.

In my 01 ,2.7 4x4 I have been useing synthetic Mobile 1 for the past 3 years. Flushed out whatever oil was in it when I got it and started useing a fram filter and just did my third oil change with no problems at all. My average yearly miles have worked out to 8,700 mikes and I change the oil and filter around that time.
The engine runs as smooth as butter with no valve noise no matter how cold or how long it sits. Always do a grease job about 3 or 4 times a year because of so much off road and water driving. Love my TOY!!! Mike
