A guy just came and test drove my 95 4runner v6, but didnt want to buy it becase he said his 88 4 cyl. 4runner has more power and thinks there could be somethign wrong. I just put a new engine in it and don't believe to be any slower that it used to be. Any comments?

 

He is compairing a runner that weighs close to 1000lbs more with a v6 to the older much lighter model.

 

I went from a 22re runner to a 22re reg cab, the reg cab seems like it has a V8, also is the runner a auto? There is your reason...for a short time I owned a 91 V6 auto xcab. Around town it was no different that my RE's, but on the hwy....big difference. Let him know that.

The differnce is only 33 hp, and 45 ft/lbs...an auto tranny eats most of that....so hwy is where you will see it, and thats mainly tq differences

 

They don't call the V6 the "3.slow" for nothing. They barely make more power than a 22RE.

As mentioned above, factor in the wieght of a 4 door, full metal top 4Runner and it's gonna feel about the same as a 4 cyl.

 

Plus, if he's basing it simply on acceleration, I don't think it's quite a linear relationship between HP and seat-of-your-pants pull. Rather, if you want twice the pull you need like 4 times the power. Unfortunately I can't substantiate this at all, even though I'm an engineering major, because I am not defining my terms and would rather work in biases and ambiguities

 

I can confirm that my 92 22re 5-spd reg cab is as quick as my 95 v6 4runner around town, though not nearly as smooth. However, HUGE difference on steeper highway hills. 22re struggles to go the 65mph even with a downshift and the 4runner had no problem pulling up hills at 75mph.

That said, I still prefer the 22re for the reliability and the extra 8mpg (maybe 2-3 of those mpg are from the weight difference?).
