hello my name is clint and i purchased a 1986 4runner yesterday for 4000cdn it has 145km on it.the motor is a 22re 5spd it runs excellent but the head gasket is leaking oil and i was wondering if that is hard to replace and any precautions i should take thank you.

actually if you have any type of mechanical ability, time to do it right, and patients it is not that hard to do at all. Get a good repair manual and read thru the steps before starting to get familiar with what you need to do and you will be fine. Took me a weekend last time I had to do it.

I'm in the process of doing it right now. Biggest thing I've learned is take good quality photos, bag and label EACH PART YOU TAKE OFF. Make a seperate bag and label the parts unbolted and label the bag of bolts or nuts for it.

The first part of my HG job was done with help, and he didn't label any of the bolts, so I'm gonna be lost there. The photos I took to help with putting it all back together didn't come out very well, so I'm getting photos ready for my HELP ME Threads, lol.

There's plenty of info on here, as well as people knowledgable to help with the questions you couldn't find on your own.

 

just take your time, and follow the instructions. if it's your first time, make sure you've got a free weekend to do the job.

might not be a bad idea to do the timing chain as well if the guides are worn.

 

dont get a cheap head gasket for a auto parts store go to the toyota dealer and get one

 

I would also have the head taken to a head shop to make sure it isnt warped, even a minor warp you dont see can cause a gasket to blow again...
