99 stock springs and shocks

hey i have a 1997 2wd limited and i wanted to know what i could expect from buying stock 1999 4wd coils and shocks from toyotapartsales.com, it comes to around 387.32 for all of that, and i want to run 285/75/16 tires so i might consider buying a 1.5" bl to clear the tires. would this be a good combination?

thanks for the help

Mark

You're better off buying them thru Evan at Northridge Toyota, 25% off and free shipping.

I would suggest after-market stuff for that price.

i've got a set of springs (front and rear) for 75 plus shipping, all you'd need is new shocks

Most lifts are still going to run a couple of hundred more but you will get another inch or two over just the '99 coils.

I'm perfectly happy with just replacing my stuff with OEM since I'm I don't too too much hard stuff off-road and my GF still can get into the truck with minimal complaining and I still sit higher than most 4Runners I pull up beside which the taller tire size helps with that.
From ground to fender flare lip I have 36" in front and 36.5" in the rear which is right for the '99s.

well i've also read that unless your shocks have a lot of wear on them, then there's no real need in replacing them.

my dad just had some maintenence done on it since he's giving it to me for college so the shocks were replaced then. take out the cost for the shocks and.....

cost breakdown:

front and rear springs- (toyotapartsales.com)- $245.30
4crawler 2" BL- $150
gap guards -$75 (hardware included)

total cost- around $470.30

correct me if i'm wrong, but this should yield me about the same amount of lift as the OME suspension setup, which ive been quoted from toyota of dallas $556.36 for the whole suspension setup.

but with this, since it's a minimal suspension lift, no need to worry about the panhard drop bracket (maybe) brake lines, cvs (2wd baby!)

and to put 33's on stock wheels, i'd say to me it sounds like a pretty good deal... since being a 2wd, this is mainly for looks....anyone else agree?

First off, the 4wd springs will basically bring you to "normal ride height" and then the body lift will give you 2" above a stock 4wd 4runner. Running 285s with only a 2" lift will be pretty tight. A cheap fix would be to install some 1" coil spacers on top of the 4wd springs, or run 2" coil spacers and a 1" body lift. Most people would agree that you need atleast 2.5" to 3" of lift to run 285s with minimal rubbing.
Also, gap guards can be made for around $20 using pond liner and plastic (similar to stock) fasteners, so you shouldn't need to spend $75 on them.

Mark, your honesty about your mods just being for looks is refreshing and yes,if it's not going to get the abuse of actual off roading why spend the extra cash. Sort of like BFG selling their AT tires in 22" sizes.

will i need new shocks if i add that 1" spacer?

edit: scratch the 1", how about a full set of the .75" topout spacers and a set of extended studs, that'd be a hell of a lot cheaper than the cornfed 1"

edit again: damn they're actually .375"

I think I have heard bad things about running 285's on 7" stock wheels?

Don't tire manufacturers recommend 8" rims because of the width? Backspacing can certainly be an issue, but I think the tire bulges too much on too narrow a rim.

yeah they do, but plenty of people are using 285/75/16 on a stock rim and even some using 305/70/16....i'd assume its alright

Fair enough. Good to know.

Too bad you can't put 315's on them. I really liked my stock rims. They are for sale, by the way.

When I installed my lift, I also replaced my stock shocks with OME so I'm not positive about needing new shocks. My best guess is that with only 1" spacers its not necessary, but would probably improve the ride quality.

The top out spacers are only .375", but that provides .5" of lift, so stacking two will give you a full inch. Also, check on the market place section for spacers. There always seem to be sets floating around on there, and buying used spacers is a pretty safe bet because they are just about impossible to wear out.

I don't know but Strapp22 quoted me $132 shipped for rear OME springs. You can always get spacers for the fronts for not too much (I have a set of Revteks that I have not put in the classifieds yet but others will on occassion sell front spacers.). I have seen them for as low as $50.

I don't think OEM shocks are that expensive and combined w/ the above will net you close to the same amount you quoted.
