Just picked up a 91 4runner

I just dumped my 95 cougar v-8 i just dumped $2000 in a new engine and the tranny went ... so i decided I was going to throw the remander of my money into somthing i wanted. I really wanted a toyota tacoma/pickup (pre-runner stance min!!) after six months of searching I found nothing worth having. I saw this 4runner and fell in love ... I'm kinda broke now but come summer I am going to I wanna throw some major $$$ at it... Whats would be the best thing to replace first??? the front c/v's are going first the boots are cracked so i'm ditching them quick... I work for Advance auto so parts cost are not a big deal and i'm a yota t-ten student!!! but I train on newer stuff so my access to specific info is limited!!! changed wires cap/rotor. Sythetic oil change (mobile 1) purolator pure-1 oil filter

My thoughts
1.>c.v. axles
2.>brute force premium u-joints all around (no prob out of originals but you know its a 91 maint is unknown)
3.> make it look nice (brush gaurd ect...)
so far its freakin awsome!!
I'll add pics soon!!

if you are planning on doing moderate wheeling, forget the bush bar and spend a bit extra for a tjm 15/17 (?), arb sahara/bull bar or go for a custom unit. you will eventually want a winch and it wont fit a bush bar.

get to know the members near you and get out with them so you gain some seat time. talk with them about the mods they have done and in what order and what they would do differently if they were in your shoes.

btw, if your truck has running boards, take them off before you post pix because, thats the first thing these folks will say!!

welcome to yotatech and the empty wallet syndrome.

1) Check and replace ALL of the fluids down to the gear oil. Also air filter, oil filter and fuel filter.
2) Check and replace all joints that need it (including Ball joints). And check all control rods, inner and outer tie rods etc. Also in this step make wure to go through the brakes.
3) Shocks if necessary.
4) go over all the vacum hoses and the charging system and replace what's necessary. Change out distributor cap, rotor plugs and plug wires in this step also.
5) check radiator and replace all hose and worn belts.
6) Start working on the looks...paint all underneath surfaces you want etc.
7) start adding whatever you want aftermarket (bumpers, lights, stereo etc.) This can be done in conjunction with number 5.
8) Wash and wax...very important for long lasting shine and makes you look good while you are covering the 4runner in as much mud as possible.

Hmmmm anything I forgot? *scratches head*

Happy wheeling!

Welcome to yotatech. Like leebee says, forget the brushgaurd and get either a TJM or ARB bull bar also on top of what ctcost says replace your steering damper. There is a recall for your steering rod so get that done, check sticky at top of page and if you got the V6 call the dealer and see if the headgasket has been replaced. Have your VIN ready when you do.

Yeah NGK on the plugs. I just use Castrol GTX 20/50 on the oil. But I'm in a warm climate...Might want to go a little more spec if it's cold. Usually one of the FRAM filters is fine and there is a cross reference on the board somewhere to the next larger size filters.
