L50 vs W56 transmissions
I'm doing a bit of hunting for a buddy here, so humor me if I don't have all the details.
The truck is a 1986 5-spd 4x4. Problem is the tranny is gone, so I'm trying to locate a replacment for him. Now I know it currently has a W56 tranny in it.
I'm found a guy with an '81 5-spd tranny and T-case. I found that that tranny would be the L50, but that the t-case should be the same RFA1 21 Spline (yady yada).
I know the '81 tranny is for a 22R, not a 22RE, but does anyone know if it could be bolted onto a 22RE(seeing that the t-case is the same)?
Also does anyone know the gear ratios in the 2 tranny's? If the tranny would work, but would require a regear at the axle, it wouldn't be worth it(buddy doesn't want to wheel, just wants a good DD).

Everything you need to know is at the bottom of this page. Everything should bolt up, but the shifter locations will be different, so you will have to cut new holes, and the older trannys are not as strong as the w56's.

don't put that on your buddy's truck. it's 4 inches shorter than a W56 and will require that you relocate the shifter holes, as well as have your drivelines reworked. all that for a heavy cast iron pig that's half as strong as a W56.
