Just advanced my timing....ok?

Hey fellers,
I just advanced my timing on my 93 4runner 3.0. I kinda did it by ear, shorted the TE1 and E1 ports, and turned the dis. clockwise. This does give it a bit more pep, and Im not hearing any pinging. However, it now idles at about 1000. Will I be alright with that? And how are my plugs gonna react? Any other big issues I should worry about? Thanks. Alex

If you don't have any pinging, than you are probably allright. Personally, I probably wouldn't go much more than 12*. What's your timing at? I've never heard of anybody having trouble as a result of advancing the timing a few degrees as long as you don't go way way advanced. As far as the idle, it's only 200 above where it's suppose to be, so probably not that big a deal. You can re-adjust it if you need too.

Well, just my $.02.

Ohhhh ... to have simple carbureted engines still...

On my 22R, this was a seasonal adjustment. Tweak the air/fuel...tweak the timing...tweak the idle speed...Nothing on that engine you couldn't fix with a screwdriver and/or hammer...

I would assume in a fuel injected engine, the computer will see the idle speed and adjust the air/fuel to get it back down... SO LONG AS YOU'RE NOT KNOCKING/PINGING it won't hurt anything - the higher idle speed is an indication of how much more power you're extracting from the fuel.

Im not sure what * my timing is at....like I said, I did it by ear. I just listened to the engine, and watched the RPMs. When I got done, it was about 1000 at idle, and Ive driven it a pinch since and the idle seems to have dropped a little bit. But it still seems to have some good pep. Im likin this! Thanks all, Alex
