I recently bought some used Bushwacker fender flares for my 2nd gen and need to install them. They didn't come with any hardware .

Can somebody tell me if you are supposed to drill a hole, then install a plastic insert into the sheet metal and then attach the flare with a screw into the plastic insert (no metal to metal contact) like the way the original chrome fender trim pieces were attached, or do you just drill the lip of the fender and then use pan head screws to attach the flare directly to the sheet metal?

I'm planning on using #12 stainless steel pan head screws and bonded sealing washers from Fastenal. I have rust starting to develop in the wheel arches and I dont want the screw holes to rust out in a year or two. Any suggestions?

Bill - I *think* that those flares used existing holes. I had a couple of screws in them also (under the rear part of the wheelwell opening).

You can get the fasteners at Metric Screw and Fastener on Rt8 in Allison Park (412) 487-4989. I found the exact item that came with them. These things might be reusable, but mine were shot after being on for 8 years.

The parts are made by Auveco Products. I don't have a catalog, but I did find a pic of it on their site (called a "Push-Type Retainer"):

I stand corrected. You drill 1/4" hooles in the inside lip of the fenders.

 

Bought them from Cebby used for I think $180 or was it $210, I can't remember right now.

Contacting Bushwacker would be too easy!!! Sometimes the solution is almost too obvious.

I'm leaving for a meeting in Glenshaw now so I'll check out Metric screw while I'm up that way. Hopefully they have something in stainless steel.

 

It was $180. Those Auveco units are plastic.

 

Call bushwacker, I bought mine used and when I told them they sent out hardware right away. They have two different mounting styles too.

Mine came with rivets but someone told me #10 or #12 self-tapping screws are better so that's what I used.

 

Check out the seller 'worktrucksusa' on eBay. He has killer prices on Bushwacker flares for 2nd and 3rd gen 4Runners. I just bought a new set for $339 shipped! In fact they were shipped today.

Bushwacker will send you new hardware and as above the directiosn are on their website.

 

When I installed Bushwackers on our 97 Tacoma, it was as simple as removing the bolts there, shoving the bushwacker in place, and putting the bolts back into place.

 

The plastic screws that came with my bushwackers were crap. Bought some sheet metal screws. Drilled a few starter holes, installed screws, drilled rest of holes, took flare off, primed all holes, reinstalled flare, primed all scews again. Rust worries me.

 

Just hurry up and get them on so we can see your rig afterwards... SHEESH!

 

Thanks Paul and everyone else for your input. I have decided to pretty much follow what Paul did (drilling and priming to attempt to slow down the rust) but I'm going to use plastic inserts in the fender instead of screwing right into the metal. And I'm going to use stainless steel screws. I'll post pics soon.

Edit: Keggo, I'm telling ya, with little kids you can't get anything done on the truck quickly!! Unfortunately, working on the truck has to fall down the priority list below the kids.
