Going from 3rd gen 3.4 V6 to 1st gen 4 cyl : will I save gas?

I'm probably gonna have to sell my truck due to rising gas prices. I have other debts to clear, and I can't since all my savings go into the oil companies' pockets...

So I'm contemplating getting a 1st gen. What kind of mileage did these get, compared to the 3.4 V6?

Will running 31s hurt a lot? Will I need to re-gear.?

I'm devastated at the idea of selling the 3rd gen.

i get between 17-22 mpg, 22RE 5spd with 31s @32psi and 4.10s w/ front hubs unlocked, and drive light on the throttle, I also have a K&N airfilter, and no muffler. I think its decent for a 4x4....I dont know what kind of mileage you're gettting. I'm not sure if i should regear or not....

honestly would you really wanna give up your truck for another?? would you really be happy with another truck and is the savings worth it? gas sucks but i bought my truck to play with so its a luxury expense. now its one thing if you said you wanted better gas mileage and then went to a corolla. well hopefully these are questions you thought of.

Yes. I need a truck to haul the kids around, and I want something that will allow me to keep buying home improvement stuff. I also modded my 3rd gen to play off road with it. I would do the same with the 1st gen.

So I need a truck.

It is a luxury expense, yes, but so is my Z3, and I'm not selling that one. Besides, I HAD to pay for a bunch of stuff lately : my home air conditioner broke twice, 50% of my city taxes are unpaid, I had to buy a new shed, my landscaping finally got done but there were 2 000$ of extras, and I bought a lot in Costa Rica. So everything fell on me face at the same time.

Every penny I planned to use for this now vanished as gas. I can't afford it anymore. And I need a 4x4 due to winter here. So a truck is my only option.

I would say do things to increase the gas milage of the 4Runner that you have. I don't think that a 4cylinder 1st gen is going to get better gas millage. Do a cat-back, an Amsoil air filter, electric fan, and maybe even some headers. Why sell a really nice 4Runner, to just buy another one that you don't even know if it will be as reliable.

If you are going for gas milage, but want all wheel drive then maybe a 4cylinder Rav4 or something that is light like that so the motor doesn't have to work so hard.

Then you milage will evt. suck in the 1st gen also. Plus you will spend new money to mod it.

Loose the Samurai. Keep the 3rd gen for play on weekends only. Commute in the Z3.

I get the same gas mileage in my 3.4 as I did on my 22RE. So would not be worth it. If I could I would buy a motorcycle or a Toyota Corolla.

The Samurai is for my gf to use when we go off road. I already commute in the Z3 - which gets mileage just as bad as the 4runner BTW.

99 runner, I already have an Amsoil filter, and I have absolutely no money left for any type of mods. I'll be lucky to be able to buy winter tires - on my credit card, of course.

can't she drive with you? Let her drive some of the time?
Don't get to far into dept.

Or more be practical sell the Z3 as this can't get you through winter anyhow and buy a used one later when you can afford it.

86 2wd turbo 5 speed. 22-25city 31+ highway Worth it? Barely tolerable for me. Most vehicles dont do much better I suppose, but they have more comfort.

guess my thing is that you already spent the money on your 3rd gen and even if you were a mechanic by trade the money you save if any on gas might go to repair bills and mods. but thats me.

yeah, I think the consensus is that the 5VZE is almost as efficient as a 22r from 1st gens...there are some people on both ends of the spectrum but in general the 3.4 is a pretty efficient engine. You will not be saving much if any by switching, unless your 3.4 is a total dog for whatever reason.

if you sold the 3rd gen. then bought a 1st and modded it for playing on the weekends, how much ahead are you really gonna be? tires/gears/locker/lift plus the initial price of the purchase and replacing anything that needs to be replaced or rebuilt.

FWIW, I doubt you will get any improvement in mileage with a 1st gen, vs. your 3rd gen. That's based on my own experience.

It's ok, I'm selling it anyway. I just won't get a 1st gen.

With the money you have selling the 99, get a 1st gen for offroad and a Honda or something that gets 25+ mpg for your daily commute.

No money for that, I'm afraid. I need 4wd for winter (or AWD), so I'll likely get some Honduh CR-Ghey or something until I get more cash.
