Question Looking about at a '96 4runner and have a few ?s

Ok I'm looking to replace the 3.0. Enough is enough and I've had enough.

Anyways, I stumbled across a 96 4runner with 102K miles. It's an SR5 w/ a 5-speed and 4wd. It seems to be in pretty good shape and is sitting on a used lot. They are asking $7K for it which seems decent.

Anyways, my question is are there any real problems that were worked out in the 97 model? Maybe something that I should wait and find a newer one for. I do know about the HG recall for the external leak that they could develop. Is there anything else?

I'm half tempted to jump on it but we'll see.

Here's a quick pic.

Thanks

I work at a stealership...we mark our cars up a lot. Beat the crap out of them...you could get that rig for 6k easy.

Find out if the truck has been there longer than 90 days. At least here with our dealership there is more incentive to get the vehicle off the lot after 90 days. We could care less if we have an off-brand car on our lot. As long as it isn't a POS. Oh and I work for a high-line dealership.

That's an awesome price since in the Denver area I could buy that '96 and then ask for a few grand more and get it.

I'm selling my 96 limited for $7500. Just recently added over $2000 in mods in the past year. All of those go with it along with the most of the original parts. Let me know if you're interested.

Thanks for the input guys.

Sorry ASU I'd love to have the e-locker but I think I'd rather go with the 5-speed. Plus modding is half the fun. But, how many miles do you have anyways?

I called the guy but he was busy. I'll give him a call after lunch and see what he says.

Those 4Runner were solid as they come and there are aboslutely no problems with 3.4L V6.
$7000 really isnt a bad price.

3rd gen values have dropped a bit now that 4th gens are into their 4th year and it shows cause I got $11k for my '97 last fall and it had 99k on it but it did come with $2500 in mods that were less than a year old but there's no way I could get that this year so I'm glad I sold it when I did.

On 96-97 3rd gens...look out for leaky water pump seals, external HG flaws (will leak down the side of the block from #6 if I am not mistaken) - (check the recall campaign via the VIN, leaky rear axle seals (have to pull the drums), and a worn clutch pedal assembly bushing (it will click, squeak or groan if it's bad).

For the most part they are very stout vehicles, but like anything else a lot depends on the maintenance history.

That was a great price. I would have bought it if everything checked out.
