Stupid Maintainance Question of the Day

I am switching to AMSOIL, and it says that you need to change the oil filter in between due oil changes. The only time I have taken the oil filter off, has been when the truck was already drained of oil since I was using conventional oil.

If I take it off while AMSOIL still in it won't it just spill out? Or is there a seal in there that prevents oil inside from spilling out the oil filter gap? If not, how are you supposed to accomplish this? Thanks

some oil will come out by removing jsut the filter in between oil changes, however it will not drain your truck by removing the filter alone.... it is common for people to need to top off about a quart after they change their filter with synthetics when they arent changing out all the oil, just to get it back up to full to make up for the oil lost as some little bit drains and the filter holds....

Yes, some will spill out and you will have to top off a little. I have been doing that for a couple of years now.

Remember that you do not need to have the engine warmed up. This makes it a little easier (cleaner).

yeah. do it on a cold engine, all the oil should be in the oil pan. There is an anti-drain back valve in the filter which aids in cold starts since oil doesnt need to be pumped through the filter. But this will hold some oil in the filter which will spill out when you take it off. If you remove the filter VERY VERY slowely when you break the seal alot of the oil will seap back into the motor instead of onto the ground.
