4-7-05 Comcast outage

How many of you lost Internet on Thursday?
Here is the reason why.
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,13120239

Most users are using Comcast's DNS #s of
68.87.66.196
68.87.64.196

I know a member I talked to last night on the phone lost service until I told him how to set up his router with different ones.

I have been using Verizons for a year now, and they seem to be faster.
The #s are in the post above for Verizon.
That is why I did not lose service Thursday since I was not on Comcasts DNS routers which failed.

Quite an argument by a Comcast spokesman to stick with the ones Comcast wants you to use.
If your router is set up to obtain a DNS # automatically, then you would get one of the ones that failed.

Interesting. I'm with Adelphia, but I heard that Comcast is buying them out so I should prepare for new sporadic service outages.

Yeah, mine seemed to be on and off for yesterday and Wednesday. Good to know it won't be happening again.

Mine was out. So I watched a movie, Sideways, and when it was over things were back.

I have comcast and mine is still acting funny .. its slower, and certain web pages still don't come up ... google, hotmail, ebay and some others. I've reset the router and the modem several times

I've had Comcast for years, and this is the first major problem I have ever had with them. No reason to jump ship over one outage IMO. In the case that Verison just has faster DNS servers, that could be a reason to switch. But for the most part I find Comcast acceptable.

Well yeah, Comcast's service is faster, 4 megabit download right now, and Verizon's DSL is slower.

But you can increase your speed by playing around with different DNS #s.

For example:
I am using Verizon DNS #s here.
2005-04-09 16:21:03 EST: 4100 / 318
Your download speed : 4199322 bps, or 4100 kbps.
A 512.6 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 326131 bps, or 318 kbps.

Now switching to Comcast DNS #s
2005-04-09 16:26:28 EST: 3556 / 318
Your download speed : 3641926 bps, or 3556 kbps.
A 444.5 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 326104 bps, or 318 kbps.

This was earlier today.
Both were ran from the Seattle test server.
http://sea.speakeasy.net/

I get better results with Verizon DNS #s.

I just checked mine.

2005-04-10 14:05:23 EST: 4250 / 349
Your download speed : 4352546 bps, or 4250 kbps.
A 531.3 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 358187 bps, or 349 kbps.

Ben, are you hooked through a router too, or straight to the cable modem?
I go through a router which can slow it down a tad, but not much.

Both you and I are above the 4.0 cap though.
Many are pretty hot over over on the DSL Reports Comcast forum about paying for the Gold package where they get 6.0, and most are only seeing between 4.5 and 5 megabits or so.
When they upped us awhile back, something got messed up for the Gold package customers who pay $10 more than we do.

I am running through a router too.

I am happy with Comcast's service and couldn't see paying anymore money than I already do.

Comcast DNS outage was a quick reminder to use a third or replace the second comcast dns with something from Sprint .... like it did.

Ben, there are two areas on your PC to enter new DNS numbers if you are using a router.
If you do not use a router, all you have to do is go to your Control Panel to your network settings and choose the TCP protocol and select its props to enter what you see here.

If you are running a router, you must ALSO enter your routers setup page via your web browser and also enter the info as shown here if it is a Linksys.
Other brands of routers have a different but similar setup.
Make sure you enter the numbers in both the router and the Control Panel for your network.

As you can see, I am only using two sets of numbers for right now, Comcasts DNS numbers are not in there, as I am not satisfied with their performance.

You can use any DNS number you want, and you can Google them to find some.

What you can do is have Comcasts number in as #1, then add others for your 2nd and 3rd choice.
I just eliminate Comcast altogether in my situation.

I agree

I understand now. Thanks Corey.

I have always heard people talking about that but didn't have a clue. I will mess with it when I get home.

If your a comcast user then use sprint's dns server as your secondary dns

204.117.214.10

I had problems...like everyone who has comcast...switched over to the sprint dns server...never had a problem,

yet another outage...here are some dns servers that were listed on dslreports....

Some DNS servers I reccomend:
4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2
4.2.2.3
4.2.2.4
4.2.2.5
4.2.2.6
These are all DNS server addresses that resolve differently across the country. Some are GTE, some Level3, some Verizon, but are all VERY speedy and work well. Some also reccomend using the ORSC's public servers, one of which is 199.166.24.253. I have not used this server, but others say it is fast.

dadkins adds these DNS servers:
SpeakEasy Nameservers
66.93.87.2
