tune up questions

i've been searching the forum for a while and found lots of good info on tune ups. however, i don't quite understand some of it.

i'm thinking my truck is about ready for a tune up. i have already replaced my plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. i used wires i bought from auto zone, my mechanic did my plugs. not really sure what kind of plugs he used but i'm pretty sure he used the stock toyota plugs. and lastly i used a stock toyota cap and rotor.

my truck still seems to be running somewhat funny. it's not running as smooth as i think it should be. it has a somewhat rough/wavy idle and has trouble starting sometimes. it turns over and chokes and sputters until finally it reaches 1,000 rpm and idles somewhat smoothly. however, it only starts like that SOME of the time. most of the time it starts normally.

another issue i'm having is my engine sputters and stalls whenever it gets wet. again, i already replaced all the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. it runs like poo when it gets wet. i did a little wash down on my motor today and it sputtered and stalled and lost power for a while. then after driving a block or two, it went back to normal.

also, i'm hearing stuff about pcv valves, maf, and some other jibberish that i'm not quite comprehending. i'm still a newbie to the wonderful world of automechanics. will someone please explain these to me? i am willing and ready to learn

i also heard cleaning the the throttle body might help out too. how might i go about doing this? is it very difficult?

and what's this seafoam jibberish? does it really work? how do i use it?

thanks in advance everyone!

change your fuel filter too, that can cause periodic sputtering sometimes. Its an important part of a tune-up

Sounds like you're still getting moisture in your distributor. There's a seal where the cap fits on. Is it still good? After washing your engine, pull the cap off and see if there's moisture in there. If there is, it will make the rig run like crap.

my99- yes, i replaced the seal when i replaced the cap and rotor and it still sputters when i gets wet! but next time i wash down my motor, i'll take off the cap and check inside. worth a try.

jimabena74- i had my timing checked and adusted not too long ago. wasn't off by much and my motor still sputters.
