I was dropping a girl off from our first date last night and the clutch went out on me. Im going to go buy the kit today from napa andi was just wondering how I replace the clutch? I replaced the one on my corvette by dropping the transmission. I done really want to pull the motor because I don't have an engine lift. Thanks for the help. Like I said, Ive never really done much to this truck because I haven't had to. I have some mechanical knowledge of cars in general but I don't know about my truck. Thanks!

Im interested in a reponse too, my clutch has been slipping for a while now. (I'm not sure if that's the same type of problem you have.) But I probably need a new clutch, or friction plate, or something. (I don't know anything about transmissions. )

 

ya just drop the trany. it is a hasel but your trucks arnt a cople feet in the air and you only have a 2wd no t case. expect to take all day or longer if you have all the parts. your flywheel may need resurficing. good luck

 

didn't take me too long...just crank the cover bolts in a cross pattern so you don't put all the pressure on one side of the clutch disc.

the hard part is getting the tranny aligned...i found the easy way was to lay behind my tranny jack and aim for the pilot bearing, and ram it in there with the engine slightly drooped back

 

Get yourself a transmission jack,it makes the job a whole hell of a lot easer. oh you must resurface the flywheel.It will save you trouble down the road to do it right the first time.

 

i didnt resurface my flywheel, and its a year later with my centerforce dual friction on with no problems, my clutch is awesome! anyways, i was doing an engine swap when i did mine so it was easy, but i researched both methods... on the 4x2, its pretty easy, just unbolt the crossmember and the rear driveshaft from the tailshaft of the tranny, disconnect the tranny from the engine and you are all good.... make sure you buy the $5 spline tool, its wimpy plastic but if you dont have it, can seriously damage stuff..... also replace the throwout bearing and pilot bearing

 

You can go to this site for instructions on replacing clutch. Pulling the engine isn't the easiest way but if that's your call just browse through the site to engines and then it will tell you how to remove that!! They have alot of online repair guides that are very good and better than the Haynes and Chiltons!! Good luck!!

any clutch set worth its asbestos should have the little alignment tool. also, make sure you get a clutch with springs and not rubber pucks on the disc. the rubber pucks aren't as smooth as springs and they harden over time which makes their dampening effect almost nil

 

Thanks for the info guys. I got the transmission out about an hour ago and took the old disc and pressure plate out. Im taking a break now, Ill take the flywheel off tonight so I can get it resurfaced tomorow.

Also, in the bell housing where the clutch and flywheel are, all around the bell housing it wasnt just dusty It was muck, like there was oil in the bell housing. It was nasty, is i suposed to be wet or dry in there? does that mean that i have a rear main seal leak?

Sounds like a rear main seal leak. I know mine was leaking and replaced during the clutch R & R, w/out removing oilpan, etc. Not sure what is involved on the 4cyl.
