AZ4RJ March 2003 - AZ Rocks 2003, NEW INFO, NEW DATE, MEGA EVENT!
After much deliberation locally here in Phoenix, I have made the executive decision to abandon the original dates of March 6-9, 2003.
We will be combining the Arizona TTORA "AZ Rocks 2003" event and the 4X4Wire originated AZ4RJ. To create a mega event called AZ ROCKS 2003, held March 20-23, 2003. At Florence Junction, Arizona.
This will be one mega event with camping on site at Florence Junction, Port-A-Potties brought in and established sponsors. This will also give people like Max Green a chance to wheel with fellow Texan Robert Canon, solid axle trucks and the opportunity for the 4Runner crowd to run harder trials with smaller groups.
There will be 3 levels of runs each day: easy, medium and hard. No 3rd Gen 4Runner will survive the hard trials with out significant body damage and I personally will be leading the Medium trails which include: Martinez Canyon and Upper Woodpecker that JadeRunner recently ran when he was here.
There will be easy runs for the stock 4Runners/Tacoma's every day as well. This is a 4WD event so if you have a 2WD, you will not see much action.
Here are the links to the "AZ Rocks 2003" official website.
Please sign up ASAP so we can plan appropriately for the turn out.
http://www.azrocks2003.com
Sign up and view the GPS maps of where the campsite is located. There will be a beacon on a very large pole so you can find the campsite at night.
Martinez Canyon:

Upper Woodpecker:

Coke Ovens:

Lower Ajax, Jack Handle, Oak Flats, Orville’s Loop, Pictograph Wash, Montana Mountain, Flat Tire Canyon and more.
I do apologize if the date change does not work out for you or creates more effort to get the time off, but the newly created event will just be so much better.
Please leave this post sticked for at least 2 weeks.

I signed up without adding the newsletter.
Well, look at the bright side, you already have the AZ State trust Land Permit.
*** If you are going to attend the event, let me know and I will get you an AZ State Trust Land Permit. ***

This is great! I do have a question however...is the medium passable in a 3rd gen w/out a lift? (without damage) If so, what would I expect to encounter? I am looking into getting a lift, but with IDRC also in march, it is doubtfull it will be installed in time for the event.
Soon as I know, I'll be signing up for the appropriate day/event.

Click here for pics from the "easy" trails. Box Canyon and Coke Ovens. The hill climb featured in the HUGE video is optional and really just for showing off and getting wheel stands.
Go for the easy ones. If you have a locker you most likely will use it even there. With no locker you can make it with the good old momentum technique. I'm doing easy Friday to help out if someone needs a tug or a spot. When these options are available no one wants to admit that they don't belong on harder trails. People get in over their heads and it takes forever to get them through. There is always the option of riding along in an empty seat one day to see what the big boys are up to.

Excellent! Thanks, I have spent many hours in the backwoods of WA 4wheeling...but that was in past vehicles that were much more prepared for off-roading, not to mention much less worry about damage
I can definately remove the factory running boards for the trip...and yes I have the factory locker.
To the easy trails I will go
Maybe next year, with lift and a another year of mods I will hit the hard stuff
btw- those easy pics look like exactly what my runner is ready for

You should sign up for he easy stuff. On the medium without a rear locker you will not even make it though at all. Without sliders you will incur signifigant body damage. Sliders will completly prevent this.
Stick with the easy trails both days. Personally they are not really all that easy.

AZ4RJ-AzRocks2003 State Trust Land Permits - Urgent! Read Now!
If you will be attending the AZ4RJ/AzRocks2003 event it is YOUR responsibility to obtain an Arizona State Trust Land permit BEFORE attending the event. Do this now! If the Pinal County Sheriff pulls you over and you do not have a permit, you will be fined. The fines are steep so just get a permit, it just easier.
To obtain a permit contact the Arizona State Land Department, they will send you an application; you will then complete it and send it back with a check for either $15.00 for an individual permit or $20.00 for a family permit, the state will then send you the validated permit back. The permits are good for one year from the date of issue and grants you access to the State Trust lands.

Off-Highway Vehicle and Recreational Permitting Program
The Off-Highway Program manages the use of off-highway vehicles on Trust land to protect the land and resources while providing opportunities for responsible operation of off-highway vehicles. Activities are limited to existing and approved roads and trails. Be respectful of others, keep dust and noise to a minimum to avoid closure of land to motorized vehicle use.
Arizona State Trust lands are not public lands such as National Parks or Federal Forests. Any use of State Trust land requires a permit from the Arizona State Land Department with the following exceptions: (1) a valid Arizona Fishing or Hunting License allows the individual (only) to be on Trust land while actively and legally engaged in the permitted activity; (2) certain archaeological activities approved by the Arizona State Museum.
Recreation Permits are available for individual ($15), family ($20), group-fewer than 20 for less that five days ($15) and a nonprofit group-for specific event or one-year period ($50). These are generally valid for one year from the date of purchase or approval.
Recreational permits allow noncommercial recreational activities such as camping (seven-day limit), hiking, photography horseback riding, picnics, bird watching, trail use, and others which are not specifically excluded from designated parcels. Any activity that is commercial in nature requires commercial leases or special land use permits.
Activities not allowed include, but are not limited to, target shooting, sighting in of weapons, paint ball, fireworks, extended camping, visiting archaeological sites (historic and prehistoric), metal. detecting, removal of natural products (rocks, cactus wood, soil, and plants, etc.) For additional information call (602) 364-ASLD (2753).

The "easy" ones are not real "easy". If you come on out plan on hanging with me and you'll be running the hard stuff (medium). You WILL need a set of real live sliders, or you will HAVE to stay on the easy trials.
Call Kongs and have them weld a set on. They already have a large batch ot 3rd Gen sliders made up.
Lets put it this way, spend 300 now and avoid spending 3000 later.
Also be sure to watch this thread:

It is where I will put the latest info.

You don't have to attend the event to get a t-shirt. Just order them from Karlton and he can ship them to you.
Someone will be at the camp on Friday morning to issue State Trust Land use permits. I am not sure what hours she will be there, but it will be before everyone departs for the runs.
