Archived email in outlook---how to retrieve?

Archived email in outlook---how to retrieve?
Hey guys,
I am pretty positive my outlook was configured to auto archive emails older than 2 years.
First off, where the heck are they? Second, is it just a matter of identifying the file (pst) and then importing it back? I would think so, but i dont know for sure.
Outlook experts: i need this answer asap b/c I need to pull up some old files for legal reasons. So please help me asnwer my first question and I think i can get it from there.

How do I access my archived mail?
1) Start Outlook.
2) See if you have your archive folder in your folder list.
If it is there just expand it by clicking on the + located on its left.
Then click on mail. All your archived mail should be there.
If you do not have the archive folder go to step 3.
3) Click on the File menu located at the top left of the pull down menu.
4) Select Open
5) Then select Outlook Data file
6) Click on the drop down box and make sure it says:
Winnt
Profiles
"Username" - whatever you use to log in to your computer
Local Settings
Application Data
Microsoft
Outlook
7) Once you are in the correct folder, there should be a file called archive. Click on it.
8) Click OK, the archive folder will open and add itself to your folder list.

From what I've read, it's better to open the file as opposed to importing it. Importing it will bring all the old crap back into your Inbox, and I don't think that's what you want.

thanks! for whatever reason, i dont have any old emails archived. but strangely, those old emails (older than 2003) are all gone and also, my autoarchive setting was set to "off"
