I got a 87 pickup 4x4, ever since i got it, when i fill the gas tank up the fuel guage reads full, once the guage gets on half a tank it just drops to empty and no longer reads the amount of gas...anyone else have this problem?? What can i do to fix it or what could possibly be wrong?

 

needs a new gas tank? or mechanically the guage is stickey.

I have an 87 4Runner, and i had the same problem about a year ago. Your sender is bad, and it's pretty easy to replace, if you don't mind working on a gas tank. Be careful not to spill gas everywhere if you live in a residential neighborhood. The first thing is to get a new sender. I got mine from toyota, but if you have another source, great. Make sure you get a new gasket as well.

Next step is to lower your fuel level. I record my mileage everytime i get gas, so i just filled up, drove for 300 miles, and then parked it.

I got the part from Toyota, and got down to business

You'll need to unbolt your skid plate, and take it off. Park it on a level surface, and get some containers. I drained the tank (via the drain plug on the bottom) but if you don't want to, it will save you time, and headache. You will want something to lower the tank slowly under there too, i used a floor jack. get the support under there, and unbolt the tank. Next, lower the tank a little bit, and attempt to disconnect the hoses. This is going to take a bit and will probably be frustrating. Lastly, unplug the sender wires.

Remove the tank, and unscrew the sender from the top, replace the new one, and put it all back together. If you have a maunuel, like one from Haynes or something like that, it will help you.

AxleIke, the sender is on top of the tank right?? I have my bed off because i am installing a flatbed this weekend, is the sender a black thing with 2 wires going to it??? and how much did the sending unit cost you?

 

Hey, I forgot that you could just take the bed off! Price i pay for a passenger vehicle. Yeah, it should have electrical wires going to it, and it should have like 6 screws holding it in. It will be a breeze to change out if you leave your bed off.

I think the sending unit cost like 60 or 70 bucks, but i don't know for sure, it's been a year. Sorry.
