Question Toyota 2L-TE Turbo diesel swap

I found a deal on a 1/2 cut of a Hi-Lux that has the Toyota 2L-TE turbo diesel. It includes the engine, transmission, ECU, driveshafts, front and rear differentials, and complete front suspension (IFS unfortunately) for around $3000 but with aound $1000 shipping. I am going to need to do something about the 3.0 in my 94 pickup and I am thinking that this seems to be a viable solution. As much as it will cost I could go with a 3.4 but I am after greater torque and just as importantly increased fuel economy. I have been reading that there are bigger and more torquey (is that a word?) Toyota diesel engines out there, but finding the tranny and other parts would be difficult. I wonder if there would be any smog related hurdles in WA state. Has anyone attempted this or have any experience?

You'll need to check on the year model of the engine because earlier models had an overheating problem that caused the cylinder head to crack. Toyota redesigned the head later on.

Toyota has two 3.0L turbodiesels : 1KZ-TE and 1KD-FTV. The 1KZ-TE engine generates 140ps@3600rpm & 343N-m @ 2000rpm while the newer 1KD-FTV generates 170ps@3600rpm & 352M-m @1200-3400rpm. Both come with an intercooler.

Toyota also has 2.5L version of the 1KD-FTV : 2KD-FTV - it comes with an intercooler also.

About the smog: the three engines are exported to Europe which means that these meet european emission standards. Just don't know if it will meet US reqts.

HTH.

Rome - is that a Jarco 1/2 cut? They get them with some regularity.

Have you checked out http://gscruiserparts.com/engines.html ?

With Jarco and GS Cruisers, you can just tell them what you want and they'll go find it.

I think a great swap for you (and me ) is the 3L Turbo Diesel (1K-ZTE or 1KD-FTV) out of the non-US 4RUnner (Surf) .

I assume you've been on http://www.toyotadieselmadness.com/

Another to check out is http://www.yotasurf.co.uk/forums/index.php?

The other thing to look at are Hino cargo trucks here in the US. Hino is Toyota's truck line and most if not all of these have diesel engines. That's what I'm researching now. My 3.0 is still alive and kicking, but I want to look at everything now and have a plan in place for D-Day....

Thanks for the input. Cebby, the one that I was looking at was the www.jarcoinc.com but they only have the one with the automatic tranny which is NOT an option for my truck. I am looking for alternatives to the whole 3VZE rebuild and the 5VZ-FE swap. The more I look at it, the 3.4 will end up being the thing to do especially considering the cost that is associated with the diesel swaps. That is my thought at this moment, but on the other hand I am stuck out here at sea, somewhere way beyond the horizon....

The 1KZTE 3.0ltr turbo diesel is a great engine with lots of power and I've only been in a non-intercooled one. It fits right up to a R150F or even a G52 gearbox. What gearbox do you have?
I would recommend you go for the 3ltr over the 2.4, if you are gonna spend that much money, you might as well have the best engine. No-one would claim that the 1kzte has never cracked a head but the imported (from Japan to Europe) 2nd hand 2LTE and 2LT name has been dogged by cracked heads. Toyota even spotted the problem way back in the mid '90s.

Jim, Thanks for the info. I wonder whether the 1KZ-TE engines were ever imported to Canada? If so then it will be a possibility since I doubt that they were ever imported to the states. The tranny was an issue that I was worried about with the 2L-TE, so that would be great to find one of the 3.0 TD's.

incidentally the 2LTE came with an R150F too, mine did, then someone took out the engine and put a 2LT in, now I have it and I've taken out the troubled R150F and put in a G52 from a Hilux pickup and its great

Hey guys been away for awhile but I'm back!
Kudos to seafarin man for considering a diesel switch if we can get a few more maybe we can get yota to bring them in again. The last diesel engine we had here was the 2LTE which they stopped offering in about 1986. personnally I want that 170hp 3L beast. hey I can dream... aviator

I was looking at G&S Cruiser parts online and they seem to be a promising source for a diesel engine. I was particularly interested in the Toyota 1HD-FT 6 cylinder since it has a turbo and 168HP@3600 rpm's and 280ft-lbs of torque at 2500 rpm's. I am not sure of the price yet, but I have sent them an email and I am waiting for the reply. It is cool that they are just up in B.C. Canada so it is not too far away from Everett. Can't wait to get back stateside....
