I've got 87,000 miles on my 4runner, and I realize I should be replacing the timing belt. I searched the forum, to see if anyone described the process, or gave any advice, but I didn't find any. I've never done this before, and I was wondering what exactly is involved in this process, and I was also wondering if it is something I definitly absolutely should take into Toyota to have them do.

How about some details on your vehicle. Like the year.

 

Since you mentioned timing belt I figure you would have the V6 (the 4 cyl. has a timing chain.) Here is an Article on how to change your timing belt on the 3.0 V6

This is offtopic from this thead but I gotta know how do people wrap up sooooo many miles on their runners so fast? Mine is a 94 with only 96K. I drove the crap out of it in the last year and only put 7K on it. I am just curious your driving habits to get this many miles... Maybe this should be it's own thread?

 

I've got 110,000 on my 93. That works out to about 12K per year. Normal.

Joey, you only put 7K miles on your Runner cause yours is always getting mods done to it by you. You can't drive and wrench at the same time!! (I'm jealous!)

I always wondered the same thing UKMyers, my '91 has almost 170,000 on it and I'm always amazed when everyone else with around the same year truck have a lot less miles than mine. hehe come to think of it, my 3 week old '02 Xterra has 760 miles But I've been purposely driving around a lot to get the engine broken in

My daily driver gets 35,000 miles a year, so his is OK mileage for me.

 

Your guys are funny.... On another subject.

I bought the car in MA during undergrade in the Winter of 2000. I did alot of traveling back and forth to NY, where I was also working part time. I started dateing the girl that ended up becoming my wife, in Ohio. So I would drive out to Ohio on some weekends. My parents live in Arkansas, so I made a couple of trips down there, and then I moved to Raleight, NC and spent most weekends making the trip to the Outer banks. Then my wife took a job in Ohio, and we made several trips up there, and know I'm back in NY, going to law school and working here. There was trip up through Canada, and a trip going around most of the east coast and back through AR, and then to NY thrown in as well.

The funny thing is, wasn't even a daily driver until recently. I like to travel and I tend to put alot of miles on vehicles fast. I should start putting less miles on it though, because I just bought my wife a Mercedes, and I rather like the speed and comfort of traveling in it.

 

I've got 98K on my 92. Of course it is not my daily driver. Omly driven on weekends.

 

I've read through instructions & it seems drawn out & time consuming to do. I usually take my vehicles in for timing belt changes. I'm too worried I'll forget something, like a bolt, or say...the belt. I say take it in, to have it done by someone who can do it in their sleep & hopefully won't miss a step. After all, it's not a rear view mirror adjustment we're talking about...could do some serious damage to your engine.

Guys who have done it may say it's a piece of cake to replace though...anyone?
