88 p/u running rough

i have an 88 p/u that is running rough, idle is very low, will stall at stops if i don't step on the gas. lots of black smoke. a couple of times it has run on after shutting off. I can smell gas often. i have checked the vacuum lines with starting fluid, no change. i changed plugs dist cap & rotor, air filter, no change. engine has 212,000 and have do major work on it. any ideas, i am open to suggestions.

pcv valve and O2 sensor.
Also check all the codes for it. Sounds like it needs a timing chain too. Check the timing and see where that is.

thanx,i'll checkout the timing, the timing chain is original, so that could be part of the problem, mine has a carb, a mechanic told me the carb was bad, but he had no explanation, i think he just wanted to sell me a carb

Ya deffinetly do your timing chain. Get a steel rail off of ebay, i got mine for $52 with shipping.

Also I have 2 carbs sitting in my garage right now, one from a running 22R and another older one but I'll sell ya both for $100.
