Springs with that sir? To change or not?
hey guys, wanted ya'lls opinion on if I should change the springs on my '98 4r when I install the Bilsteins....I don't know the reasons why I'd NEED to - are there any? I'm at 116k on the 4r....the recall WAS done on the rear springs...fronts are OEM from day one.
Was considering the Performance Products 1" lift springs...for a bit of sparkle in the 4R's step....
suggestions?
opinions?

Do your shocks need to be replaced, or are you simply upgrading? If they need to be replaced, then I'd do the springs too, as they probably aren't far behind. If you are upgrading, probably not necessary.
How many miles are on the springs, and what kind of use have they seen? Typical dialy driving? lots of wheeling? towing/hauling?

hey Jackson,
I'd say my shocks are pretty tore up...they seem a bit "floaty" and have 116k on them!
The rear springs were changed under the factory recall @ aprox 90k - the fronts are original. This truck was mainly highway driven (before me) and limited wheeling...
I hope to change that up a little bit! I'm already slowing down it's mileage accumulation!
so, I have the bilsteins arriving today....what aftermarket springs would ya'll recomend?
thanks,

If you can afford to, I'd swap them out. Probably not crucial, but it can't hurt. Since the rears were change fairly recently, does the rig sit level? I'm wondering if the front springs are sagging at all. If it sits level, it's probalby not necessary, but still can't hurt.
Do you want a lift spring, or just somethign to replace the stockers? I know a lot of people run the Performance Products 1" lift springs with Bilsteins. Also, I believe Bilstein is what TRD uses (or used) for shocks on TRD trucks, so factory springs might be a good option as well. Depends on what you what to accomplish.

I'm seriously considering the PP 1" lift springs. Mild lift, new shocks....sounds like a plot! I can't access PP's site here at work...ya know what kinda $crilla those springs go for???

[QUOTE=amorphous]It sits "pretty" level....the rear I think sags just a bit...an inch - maybe it's just me. Weird that it would sag with the recalled springs huh?
Hi, I had the recall done and finally got rid of those terrible springs. The rear of my runner sagged something awful and if i loaded up the back for a ski trip it would ride on the cone bumpstops the whole trip. I finally replaced the rear springs with the Downey 3.5 lift coils and boy what a difference. The Bils I have seem to be much more at home with the beefier coil. The best way to describe it is the truck feels more balanced and it is a much better ride.
I was blaming the ride harshness i had on the bils but it was the truck bottoming on the cones all the time. Get new rear springs, My mechanic friend who owns the shop where i work on my truck says that toyota did the recall to actually lower the ride height of the runner for roll over liability reasons. anyway I would upgrade if you are allready going to have the truck in the air.

Hey, what did the Downey's run ya? Just looking into options...the PP 1" springs are about $400 landed. Seems kinda steep, but I dunno.
I'm thinking springs would be a good call with this shock update.
