just in case you didn't know, if you EVER have a loose timing chain in a 20/22r based motor due to a stretched chain or worn guides, double check the timing cover for wear marks from the chain. they like to wear through straight to the water right behind the wall and leak right into your oil. any compitant welding shop can weld the cover after it's been cleaned.

 

Yea, I have heard that one. I recently replaced mine cus I could hear it rub on the coever. You can also get replacements on ebay for about $60.

 

Happens all the time, be sure to check! list price for a new cover is about 160, but i have seen them on ebay like bike said for about 60 bucks. My lil brothers 22RE almost went straight through, that chain turns into a band saw!

We just had the same thing on our 93 22RE. Of course, I had not found this thread previously, so we had already replaced the headgasket, etc. seeking to remedy the problem. Which of course, it didn't. Obviously, this is more of a problem than most think. One shop we visited today, had 4 different timing covers he had replaced due to this problem.

Haven't got it back together yet, but hopefully, this will solve the problem.
