Need help with the rear hatch release....car is apart now and the rain is coming!

Howdy team,
I have the rear hatch of my '00 4Runner apart to replace the rear license surround and I am having trouble with the reassembly....
I can not see how the rear hatch release is supposed to work. I can barely get the bracket hooked up inside and when I do, the outside release handle does not touch anything when it is squeezed.
Is there some trick to installing the guts that I am missing?
I have no manual for this truck.
I have made sure that the latch is "closed" even though I have the hatch open. I can tug on the cable and it unlatches, no problem. The outside handle just does not do anything.
Help! Thunderstorms are rolling in and I am in a hurry.........of course.
Did I mention that it is a pain in the butt to get my hands into this tiny space and work around the window lift components?
Thanks in advance,
Mike

OK everyone. Don't panic.
I got it. The bracket had done a 180. It's hard to imagine that there was enough room in there for it to turn but it did. All is well so you can all relax.
I hate to see y'all in such a high state of anxiety over my trials and tribulations.........
Thanks,
Mike
