I was thinking about this cause I love black and I like my OEM wheels but thought maybe for a change I would get them powder coated, maybe start going with a silver and black theme for the 4Runner.

it will be interesting to see what the wheels look like if powder-coated black! they'd probably look really cool that way ...

maybe you could even get them teflon'd just kidding about that part, but i really do imagine that they'd look really nice painted black.

You can only powder coat bare metal because the powder is put on using an electric charge. So unless they are bare already you're looking at lots of prep work.

 

Spray bomb them. Sure powdercoating is nice, but you can touch up spray paint a lot of times before it costs the same as a powdercoating. and powdercoating will inevitably chip and scratch just not as easy as standard paint.

 

I agree, plus you can top coat it with a product called "Chip Guard" by SEM avaliable in both black and clear at automotive paint supply stores for about $12 per rattle can.

 

Powder coating is great for manufacturers because they are starting with a bare metal product and they can get a durable coating without priming and with less environmental problems. But for recoating or changing colors the preparation is way too time consuming to be worth the money.

 

do a search... you should find plenty as we just had a discussion about this a month or so ago.

 

VHT Black Polyurethane wheel paint is really nice and durable if you want to take the rattle can route.

 

Powdercoating does NOT chip or scratch as easily as standard paint if it's done right;that's the idea behind powdercoating.

Actually the type of paint is what really makes a diff;my friend is a bodyshop guy and he does powdercoating and spending a bit more on a good hard paint is worth it.

i had considerd powder coating my wheels before. i got quotes ranging from $55-$65 per wheel. decided not to because i noticed alot of racer boy cars with black wheels.


powder coating is strong stuff, should stand up to tire weights being pounded on your wheels. there are also those american racing wheels "mojave" and "victor" that come with black teflon that look sharp, but powder coating is cheaper..i wonder if its stronger than teflon coating?

That's interesting, I wonder if it is like what they put on nonstick pans. I sand blasted my powder coated TJM bumper before i did some welding on it and the powder coat is very hard to remove.

 

Funny, I was jsut thinknig of this yesterday. The only chrome/silver left on my vehicle is the emblems, antennae ring, ,door lock ring, and the silver wheels. I love the blacked out look.

 

Thats what I'm gonna end up going for...a completely blacked out rig, waskillywabbit has done this and it looks AWESOME! I just gotta get my bumpers, emblems and door handles squared away.

Go to industrial warehouses i.e. Charleston Forge- a company that makes steel furniture by forging the metal and then they powdercoat it. Try to find a place like this that doesnt specialize in it but still has he facilities to do it. I just got both of my sliders done for $30 and they are made out of a lot of metal. about 12ft 2x4 tubing and 15ft 1 3/4'' tubing. All that for $30 is pretty cheap. On my way out the door after picking them up i saw a set of wheels there getting ready to be done.
