Question Labor for some work needed - how much should I spend?

Hello Board...

You guys have been very helpful in the past regarding another issue, and thank you for that. I was wondering if you could help me out with some information.

I have a 97 4runner SR5 automatic 4x4.
I recently took it in for service, and lo-and-behold, I need some mechanical work done.

As I am not all that handy, I would like to know what are the cost (P&L) estimates for these typical jobs:

* Rear Axel Seal replacement
* An oil pan reseal
* Valve cover gaskets

I am trying to determine if my Toyota dealer is charging market rate for repais on these items. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Your best bet is to call around to the local shops and dealers, get an average price, then evaluate the lowest priced shop and find out if they can be trusted.

Compare the lowest independant shop price to the lowest dealer price and if the difference is not significant, I would consider the dealer for that type of work.

I work for a rental business owned by a dealership, and they charge $70/hr for labor. They have a little book that tells them how much time each job is supposed to take, so if i were you i would ask them what the quoted time is, and then figure they may charge you another half-hour on top of that. Just a thought, but definately call around and see if other shops are the same price.
