Power steering inline filter placement check

'93 DLX pickup, extended cab, 22RE, 2wd, Automatic

Hi,
Just wanted to idiot check myself before finishing this work. I had a 3/8" inline power steering filter and wanted to install. Filter instructions indicated the 'return' line out of gearbox back to reservoir. So on my pickup that's this cooling line out of the gearbox back to top of reservoir.
The larger (5/8"guessing) line out of bottom of reservoir to pump is where I suppose a filter could go as well. I just wanted to confirm that I have the flow direction right on this filter.
If a filter were installed on the line from reservoir to pump, which way is the flow direction? The principles of the PS fluid flow confuse me a bit as the factory service manual doesn't really use the tubing diagram to demonstrate flow directions.
Any help/confirmation/correction is appreciated.
Thanks,
RH
Austin

I wouldn't put a filter on the bigger line that goes from the bottom of the reservoir to the pump. If that filter gets clogged up, it can starve the pump of fluid and possibly burn up the pump.
The path goes bottom of reservoir to pump, pump to steering box, steering box to cooler, cooler to reservoir.

Thanks Robert, looks like I've got it where it needs to be then!

Yeah, I was looking in my reservoir (without disassembling) and the screen in the bottom looks clear. These filters are probably overkill. I'm guessing a fluid change does more benefit than anything.
Thank you!

I put the same type on mine, in that exact spot. Mostly because I had just got a new oem suction hose, and that return line is easily replaced with bulk p/s hose. Just hated cutting up a new, formed, hose.
I think the screen in the reservoir is actually finer than the filter. But the filter would be easier to clean
