Learned a lesson today. Was Spooling some new rope on an old winch when a solenoid stuck. Luckily, still had about twenty feet to go so had time to disconnect the battery. Ordered a blue sea disconnect this evening. If it happens again, will have a easier way to stop the winch.

 

Lay a jacket/blanket tow strap over the middle of your steel cable while winchSing. If the cable does snap, the object on top will absorb most of the recoil and not cause the cable to rip through nearby objects.
