I recently bought a 91 4Runner, it has about a 6in lift and the previous owner welded the factory rear sway bar. I the alignment has been off and the car sways real bad. The alignment shop told me I need to replace the sway bar because the way he welded it - it can’t be adjusted. Does anyone know of a good sway bar for a lifted Toyota such as this?

 

I think the best approach you could do is make a pretty detailed list of every modification the PO made to the vehicle, front and rear. Changes to torsion bars, spacer plates, shocks, body lifts, everything you can see. Included photos. If you think something might have been changed, but not sure, list it with a question mark and take extra photos. Then go consult somebody who knows how to do a lift properly and get their input. You might very well have to re-do some portions of the modification.
This would be a good time to determine if a 6" is even necessary. I find they stress other parts of the vehicle and really aren't all that useful beyond putting huge tires on.

 

I agree with Jimkola. When people do major mods, its easy to chase behind them and fix what they did wrong but at the end of the day maybe something a lot closer to stock will be easier. Having said that, I had an 89 4runner with a huge lift and it was FUN to drive!

As far as swaybars go, there should be rods on each end and maybe theres aftermarket longer rods you can buy. Snap some pics of these welds and maybe we can figure out what you can do. Another option is removing them completely, but with a tall truck you are already playing with fire when it comes to body roll.
