Anyone else with lots of miles on 22RE with no oil burning or loss?
My 93 22RE (auto trans) is climbing closer and closer to 350K miles. I have Mobil 1 HM full synthetic 10w-40 in there now, with Yzzd1 filter. The engine burns maybe a couple ounces of oil every 4,000 miles, if that. It ran on 10w-30 conventional its whole life up until this last oil change, so nothing special there, along with budget filters.
On the other hand, I have put nothing but the best air filters in mine since it was new, usually Napa Gold. I'm starting to think that the air filter makes way more of a difference to engine life than oil and filter choices. It gets ran in a lot of dusty road conditions, yet clearly the pistons are still in great shape.
Anyone else with crazy miles and no oil consumption issues? What air filters have you been using? Is mine a rarity for 22RE motors?

Not crazy miles @ 196,000 but just a work truck when my bro owned it, and a beater, handy to have for 900 mile trips to move motorcycles, or local to the hardware, nursery, dump, etc. since I've owned it. '89 2wd manual trans. Never any special care. Change oil every 6 months, filter every other time. Walmart oils, whatever on sale when he had it. Doesn't use oil; no smoke on start or anytime. Pass California smog ok last time two years ago. These vehicles are amazing!

Air filters are extremely important. Any dirt that gets in acts like sand paper on the cylinder walls. Anytime I see aftermarket cone filters I cringe and know it will likely need a rebuild in the near future. Everyone gets hung up on performance and doesn't think much of life span.

My 87 pickup, 22R, has a lot of miles on it, as you can see in my sig. I helped it along, though, by pulling over at every 100,000 mile turnover, and did a "Happy Toyota Dance" around it. I don't know how much it really helped the truck out, but it did make 3 cop's days
They would see me dancing around my truck, and pulled over to ask me just what the heck (you get the idea) I was doing. When I explained, it cracked them up. Thought I was nuts, but funny.
Anywho, it doesn't burn any oil, but a teensy, tiny bit leaks out around the front crank shaft oil seal if I rev it a bit. It's got the groove worn in the crank, as expected after so many miles.
The 87 4Runner is the same. It's only has around 175,000 on it, though, so it only got one dance episode. The trouble I have with it is that with the weak throttle cable return spring 4Runners come with, it was VERY easy for me to rev it up a ways without intending to. Combination of big, fat, feet, and diabetic neuropathy. Makes my feet hurt like heck, but I can't feel the pressure I use. They're basically numb, as though they were asleep. Other than the pain. So it's easy for me to over rev it before I can get the clutch out far enough to engage. It has the same groove in the crankshaft.
In both the 87's, I use the Castrol Syntec Extended mileage, 10W-30, and the Purolator 300001 filter. The 4Runner had had a K&N air filter all it's life, same one the whole time, cleaned and oiled every spring, the pickup gets Toyota air filters.
My 99 4Runner I just bought. Haven't had a chance to look at the crankshaft yet, but the only oil leakage I can see is from the drain plug in the oil pan. Maybe a drop or two a day. I think it needs a new washer, but I may be wrong. In fact, that's the only leak I can see anywhere. Great truck!
Have fun!
