what is your opinion on the guides used with the timing chain? OE Toyota uses plastic and some people say that the plastic guides are a failsafe method to let you know when your timing chain needs to be replaced. Others say that it was just a way to cut costs for Toyota (same reason for using single row chain rather than double) and that aftermarket metal guides (which were OE on the early 80s 22r engines) are the better alternative.

Well I just replaced my timing cain and guied with a steel rail.206k When we got in there the plastic was long gon and the chain was starting to bore the tack hole. There was no telling how long the plastic had been gone. I would,(to be safe) put the seel rail. bryan
