problem with redline stock aircleaner to weber adapter

So I went ahead and cleaned up a stock air cleaner for a 86 Toyota pickup, and bought the redline stock air cleaner to weber 32/36 carb adapter off lce (part number-1033036).
Slapped it on, has all the hardware you need and still have hood clearance, this adapter is alot taller than it looks, Did not do anything else to the truck and took it for a drive. Idles fine and somewhat drives ok until your really get on it, it sputters like no other, did that to me all the way home and used half a tank of gas just to get home. even coasting without your foot into it. I put my original one back on, and drives perfectly fine, which is the k&n to weber carb adapter kit (part number-1033031)
Anyone else have this problem before? looking at the adapter it has alot of angles and to me I think the air flow is no smooth flowing to the carb, causing alot of bad air flow and restriction. Its basically a hat that bolts down to the top of the carb. You have alittle room inside, so its an open area around the horns.

Btw truck is an 86 toyota pickup, weber 32/36 carb jetted for phx az, with fuel pressure regulator, offenhauser dual plane intake manifold, headman header with dynomax exhaust, rv cam. Anything helps.

Hmm to me it seems like it must be either clogged element or some other type of blockage in stock air cleaner, or choke isn't functioning correctly with the adapter.

It sounds like the stock air cleaner housing and filter is restrictive enough to cause the mixture in the carb to be too rich at anything but idle. Maybe adjusting or rejetting the carb will help out?

Thats what I started thinking (and am hoping). Its definetly not a plugged up element cause I got a new wix air filter. and it does it when warmed up to, so i dont think its the choke either, but who knows, something else i can check out. Imma install it again and take it for a spin with no element and lid off the air cleaner to see what happens. Now my only concern is if it is gonna require re-jetting, that sounds like im gonna loose some power since im gonna be jetting down fuel. Thoughts?

I've had a few different air cleaner set-ups on my weber, and haven't noticed it making a significant difference on fuel mixture, but I'm no expert and can't rule it out either. I have certainly bought junk from LC before...they don't post negative reviews on their site, so who knows. The open element will draw a lot of warm air towards the carb, less so with the stock element drawing air from the front of the engine bay, so I feel like my choke idea is a possibility, I'd check it by taking a spin with the stock air cleaner installed, get up to temp with the problem happening, then take the top off the air cleaner and see where the choke is at. Easier than a rejet, but yeah if that choke is open and there's nothing wrong with the stock air cleaner it must just be the assembly is significantly more restrictive than the K&N. I'm gonna assume you'll have a little less power with the stock set up, although you'll be drawing cooler air...if it is causing these symptoms could be noticeable drop, but in my experience with the 22R the only single thing that maybe makes a noticeable power difference is a header and open exhaust.

Hey have you formed any opinion of the Offy dual plane? I've got one, ever since I installed it engine temps get up to like 3/4 of the way to overheat in some conditions...anything similar going on with your rig?

hmmmmmmmm fair point, ill give it a go and keep you posted, ill also upload a pic of this adapter im describing so yall see what i mean with "basically a room" ontop of the carb. Thats the whole reason I went to a pick it yard to find on, cooler air from the front of the motor rather than all of tht hot air under the hood. Maybe even with tht hot air it draws more air in than it being funneled in through the stock air cleaner, idk. Hopefully not. plus for a truck, never liked the idea of having an open air filter to dirt and water.

yeah i have a offy dual plane on my rig rn, never had tht problem though, only issue i had was I block off the coolant outlet under the intake which would cause my truck to randomly stall causing of condensation build up, since there was no warm coolant circulating through it. Your issue doesnt sound like its related, u replace your coolant neck? i had to, or maybe your thermostat is on its way out the door. Check out 22reperformance, they sell factory thermostats at a decent price, he even has one for a weird issue of your coolant temp fluctuating, does yours do tht?
